Bug Life

Yesterday as we were getting ready to go to the grocery store, Hayden found a bug. It was like he had found the most precious treasure in the world. He ever so carefully cupped it in his hands and carried it over to me to show me his new find. As I buckled him into his car seat, this is was he said; "Look, Mama! I found a beetle. Can I keep it? I want to name him, can I name him? His name is Takey. Can he sleep with me? Mom, Takey is my best friend. We will be together forever."
No sooner than he got these words out of his mouth, did he open his hands to look again at the bug and it flew away. "Mom, STOP THE CAR! We have to look for Takey. He lost and I can't find him." I tried to explain to him that bugs don't like to stay in people's hands. That they need to be free to fly around. They need air to breathe and grass to eat (I think). This kinda helped because he was able to hold back the tears and he said, "Next time I will get a jar and put leaves and air in there and then he won't have to get away. Then can I sleep with him?"

Very cute, but I hope that Lola doesn't like bugs. I would have freaked out if Lola had a beetle in the car. Jen - you are very brave. :)

I know in an other life I would have freaked out too but now if it keeps him quiet and occupied then great. I will have bugs in the car.

Grandma LOVES bugs in the car, and they can sleep with Hayden if he wants! So nice to read these great stories while I am in Australia! Miss you all!
