This past Thursday night, Jeff and I took Hayden, along with my sister and cousin Cole to the Shrine Circus. I love the circus and have been waiting and waiting for Hayden to be old enough to go to the circus. But I have come to conclusion that once you pass the age of 13 the circus loses all its magic and becomes mildly entertaining and at some points down right corny and even scary. Don't even get me started on the clowns. I can now see how some kids are afraid of clowns.
Anyway... I thought that the circus would be a fun place to take Hayden for a special night out with mom and dad. He was able to sit for the most part but did kick that lady in front of him a couple of times and unfortunately one of those kicks was to her head. But all in all, he seemed to have a good time. I asked him what his favorite part was and he said, "Playing hide and seek with Daddy." Nice! Hayden liked running around and playing with Jeff during intermission better then any of the acts of the circus. He even asked to go home shortly after the second act began. I guess next time I will save my money and take him to the park where we can run and play all he wants.

Jen I wish I could go back now and redo some of the things I did when the boys were small. Often what I thought they would enjoy turned out to be a big bother for them and me! Keep in mind, however, that the strangest things do impress those little minds and you may hear about the circus from Hayden years from now and he may remember it as great fun! You never know. I applaud you and Jeff for taking him--don't ever give up trying. Love Loretta
Ahhh, the circus! I'm sure that the last time I went to one was when the four of us went way back in the late 20th century (1997?). Did you happen to find my pager that I lost there?
I remember when I was small that the announcer was always eager enough to point out all of the light-up swords in order to make the poor kids feel unwanted and inadequate. "Now when we turn off the lights, all of you fortunate kids, you worthwhile and welcome human beings, light up your glow swords and demonstrate to the world how fun and fulfilling life can be! For the few without the light up goodies, please continue to plead with your cash strapped parents for an item that will gain you acceptance and make you feel whole!" Other than the light-up swords, I loved the circus. I remember that crazy animal/carny smell along with the motorcycles in the circle of death.
It's good to hear that Hayden's favorite part was hide and seek with Jeff. I'm excited for Lola to be old enough to do those kids of things. I really just want a reason to go to Lego Land.
I don't know it is was still the same announcer but they did the same thing. All the light went out and all the big light sticks came on. Oh course Hayden wanted one and I gave in. $12 and 20 minutes of fun later and Hayden had broken his.
Also, isn't one of the reason we have kids to do all the "kid" things that adults shouldn't love. I can't wait to take Hayden and the kids to Sea World. I know they (and me) will love it.
