Well, we did it. We finally helped Hayden reach on of the major goals in life; not wearing a diaper. Thats right, this past weekend was spent potty training Hayden.
I must be honest, I was really not looking forward to this, in fact I was kinda dreading it. I really can't tell you why but I was afraid that him not wearing a diaper and having to go on the potty was going to be a lot more work for me in terms of accidents, clean up, laundry and just remembering to have him stop and go potty. I also have no clue as to how to teach some one to potty.
Potty training is something that all parents and kids have to go through but it is also one of those things that no one tells you how to go about it. I mean how are you suppose to teach some one to pee in the toilet? I do it multiple times a day but it is something that, as far as I can remember, I always knew how to do. I even had sleepless nights about this process and nightmares about Hayden peeing all over the house, refusing to pee in the potty and spraying the walls and his siblings.
But I am here to report that all is going well and for the most part Hayden is potty trained and has not worn a diaper since Friday (except for bedtime). And none of the things in my nightmares happened.
It is really quite amazing because I can count the number of accidents that he has had on one hand. My favorite being when we went to Menard's to look at doors and Hayden is jumping around, which I thought was just him, and says, "Mama, I think I hafta pee." I jump into action, take his hand and start to run to the bathroom when I see the big puddle that Hayden was just standing in. Hayden says, "Mama, stop! I peed! My pants are wet." I really didn't know what to do, I mean how does one start to clean up an aisle in Menard's without bringing to much attention what the liquid on the floor actually is?
Anyway, Hayden is really proud of himself, as are Jeff and I. It is just another step that he is taking in the journey of no longer being my little baby boy. Now, I guess I will just dread the start of kindergarten and all the adventures that that new stage will bring. But before I start that, I am going to enjoy the fact that we have only 3 kids in diapers; one down three to go until we are diaper free. I think that I am going to have a party on that day.

Jen Congratulations! You were wise to start the process on a weekend, as it left you and Jeff two full days to pay close attention and get him a few days of consistent training. He is such a clever little boy, I have no doubt that he will manage just fine. Loretta
