Am I Raising Monkeys or Kids?

My kids are climbers. They always have been. As soon as they could walk, they started climbing on things. I am convinced that they learned to walk only to be able to climb on more things. You know, because when you can crawl you can only climb on toys, over turned chairs and the stairs. That doesn't get you too high or to the dangerous things.

They all climbed out of their cribs. The all have climbed onto the cupboards and gotten into things that they should not. And they all have knocked lamps off coffee tables. We really need to buy stock in light bulbs for the amount of times that we have to change the bulbs in our lamps.

It doesn't matter what I do, they just like to climb.

I have even had a babysitter tell me that she really doesn't like to watch my kids because their climbing makes her too nervous.

For the most part, they climb because they like to jump off of things or do as they call it, "big jumps" especially Quinn. (For the record, the babysitter wasn't really crazy about this either.)

I have recently discovered that Quinn like to climb up onto the rails on the cribs (that are now made into toddler bed) and walk along them. I don't know if he is trying to train to be a tight rope walker for the circus or what but he likes to get up there.

So far he has not hurt himself so I really didn't know that he was doing this. But I recently learned he does this and sometimes he gets himself stuck between the crib rail and the wall in what I can only imagine is a painful position.

I gathered this from his painful screams during what was suppose to be nap time. I raced into his room as the blood curdling screams became louder and more intense. Upon opening the door, I found Quinn pinned spread eagle between the wall and the crib rail on Jake's crib.

As I carefully removed a very upset Quinn, Jake rolled over and woke up from his sleep for a brief moment, he told me everything, "Mommy, Quinny stuck again."

Now I have to add something here. I totally wanted to take a picture. It pains me that I don't have a picture. It would have been perfect for this post but even though, I am a mommy blogger, I have to draw the line somewhere. I think that its making my kids wait while they are in pain for me to get a picture is where I am going to draw it.
For now.

Oh my boys are climbers too - gets on my nerves. I am so scared someone is going to make a plan and climb out of the top floor windows!

I haven't had to deal with my daughter climbing much but I've been told that boys are different. I guess I'll find out after this little one in the oven is born.... :)

When my girls climbed over the sides of their cribs I took it as a cue that we need to move them to the "big girl" beds. They still love getting on chairs and sofas and jumping off it though.

We do have rules in the house....No getting on tables and countertops.

I hear you, sister! I've got climbers on my hands, too. When they were 11 months old I came out of the bathroom to find all three standing on the windowsill clinging to the window dividers. I mark that as the day my hair started to gray at a rapid rate.

And I applaud your restraint at not taking a picture. Had to be very tempting.

Good choice:-)

Hayden is a bit of an acrobat too... he likes to swing from the rod that holds his curtain... and jump from things... he just started gymnastics. I am hoping it gives him a safer outlet for his acrobatic tendencies.

Good luck with your climbers!

Yikes!! Okay, that is terrifying. I am thankful for my cautious kiddo.

And I think you made a wise choice not making him wait. lol.

I'm pretty sure my little squirt will be a climber.
and good call on the picture.

Our friends son climbed up on top of their kitchen cabinets. I kid you not. Use the drawers to get on the counter to and the bottom of the cupboard shelf to get on top of the fridge and then the remaining cabinet shelves to get on TOP of the cabinet. YIKES.

They have 20 foot kitchen ceilings. YIKES. She has a monkey for sure.

Ouch! Well maybe he will learn his lesson.. but then again maybe not.

And yes my kids climb and jump off of everything too... my 3 year old scares me, she has no fear.

This reads like a prediction of the future to me. Our son climbs on everything but he is not big enough to pull some of those stunts yet. I am sure they are coming though.

There goes Darwin's theory......

I agree on not making the kids wait while you find a camera. This is why you should always have one on your person - hung around your neck or in a pocket or something. ;) Glad he's okay. This whole thing? Right there? Would have me horribly nervous ALL THE TIME.

Oh my, do I have a climber too. It's maddening. She hasn't done a tightrope walk on her crib...yet.

Welcome to my world.
I have asked my husband a hundred times, how can we get Linus to just quit climbing things? I swear he is not afraid of ANYTHING. Pain is not a deterrent for him.

So, I put a big rope in the back yard. I hung it from a tree branch about 25 feet up. I put knots in the rope. I hoped this would give him his fix for climbing. And it did... he climbed the rope, then shimmied out onto the branch and just hung there. Thank God he didn't fall - he's have broken more than a few bones, for sure.

My hubs just tells me, he's a real boys' boy and he'll just be that way his whole life. He'll get hurt and he'll learn the hard way.

I am so screwed.

Fine, fine, prioritise your kids' comfort of our entertainment.

Whatever.

My Melody is a climber...I couldn't imagine having to keep an eye on three climbers!

I used to think it was irritating that my son is afraid of heights and won't even go down a slide by himself. Now I see that I prefer it to tight rope walking. :)

I love the stuck again part.

My son is a climber too. "Nap" time is getting to be quite an adventure in our house.

My friend's son climbed out his bedroom window at naptime and onto their roof. She saw him when she went out to get the mail.

We often have similar things happen here and that image made me LAUGH!

Stresses me out just reading about it! Luckily Joseph hasn't started this much yet...
And good mom moment not to take a picture. Maybe next time? As a kind of lesson? "I know that it hurts, but You have to wait to get helped until mommy takes your picture...that's what happens when you don't listen..." No? :)

My daughters are cautious daredevils. My son...not so cautious. His track record so far is a broken nose and a chipped tooth. Sigh

How awful! I am glad that my kids don't climb that much. They do, however climb into the baby's crib. You might have to lay down some rules to prevent him from injuring himself.

Both of my kids love to climb. It makes me nervous.

Mine are climbers too! It terrifies me, but they seem unphased by the potential death.

I love your last bit about a picture...lol! I can totally picture him though!!

amazingly my two have not been climbers. We just moved them to toddler cribs in December (after age 3) and they'd each only climbed out of their cribs once. So far Adam hasn't showed signs of being a monkey...hopefully he stays that way!

Joy said...

so for now on just keep the camera in your back pocket so you can always have it handy:)

Helene said...

Wow!! My kids love to climb and jump too but I don't think any of them have attempted to walk on the rails of their cribs! You never know...maybe he'll be a gymnast someday. And then you all will look back on this and laugh...well, maybe.

So if I came to your house would I find your kids all hanging in the trees outside like the Vontraps?

My girls have a little monkey in them too ;)

Your disclosure is perfect!! I had a few climbers too. I pulled a toddler off the top of my fridge. I remember your pain.

OMGOsh! Quinn sounds like my son Teddy. Look out! (Teddy atually opened a window to my house and climbed out the window when he was just 2 1/2 yrs old! Scary as hell)

"...stuck again" Sorry - but that makes me chuckle! Like Jake is laying there thinking..."Oh, here he goes again!!!" :-) We as adults should be so adventurous! ;-)

Luckily, the kids who want to climb are usually pretty good at it. I was often up the clothesline as a toddler!

Getting hurt is no deterrant. "He'll never do it again"? That's a myth. Gotta climb.

SO, has he decided that maybe this isn't such a good idea anymore??

Love your "wish I had a picture" disclaimer... ;)

incredible...oh, a pix would have been so good...but your description made me feel like I saw him in action :)

B climbed some since he was a boy but I don't remember it being an ongoing issue. I am overprotective when it comes to the kids getting hurt or falling so having kids that were climbers would've probably already given me a heart attack by now.
