Then as I bent over Hayden and started to tickle him, time began to move in slow motion. I watched, helplessly, as Hayden swung his foot around and hit Quinn square in the face.
THWAP!
THUD!
CRACK!
WAAAAAAAAAA! Quinn let out a painful crying as blood began to pour out of his mouth.
With time once again at normal speed, I scooped Quinn up and ran into the kitchen. I quickly put a cool cloth to his mouth and tried to stop the bleeding.
In a few moments, Quinn calmed down enough for me to a chance to look at the wound. That was when I first realized that he has bit through his lip. I looked inside his mouth only to find that the inside lip looked like raw hamburger.
I picked up the phone and called the doctor, only to be told to head into the ER.
"Really?" I questioned the nurse on the other end of the phone. "It is just a small cut."
"Yes. You need to get this checked out by a doctor. It could need stitches or he might need to see a plastic surgeon." She stated.
"Seriously?!" I asked again. I was trying to seal the fact that I would not be nominated for mother of the year.
"Yes, it is our advice that you should go. I will call the ER and tell them that you are coming," and with that she hung up the phone.
I sighed and looked at Quinn who now had a pretty puffy red lip. "I guess its off the doctor for you and me."
I told Jeff what happened, "With the power going out this morning, not sleeping last night and now this injury this afternoon, this could possibly be the worst day ever." I said as Quinn and I headed to the hospital.
Quinn was in great spirits and even happy about the trip. He was talkative and happy and every time someone asked to see his 'big owie', he opened wide.
The doctor who took care of us was great and even gave Quinn a mustache with betadine. He assured me that Quinn would be fine and that the best thing was a little skin glue to seal the outer cut. Quinn was a champ, only getting annoyed by me and all my attempts to take a close-up photo.
In no time we were free to go home. But Quinn, he really didn't to leave. He was having much to much fun jumping on the stretcher and playing with the gloves.
But once he realized the gloves could come home with us, he was ready to go. And I was more than ready for this day to be over and so ready to curl up with a nice big glass of wine. It just goes to show, that when you think a day is bad, it can always get worse.

Love the betadine stache!! Sounds like you fared pretty well for an ER visit!
Glad he just needed the skin glue. When Emma got stitches about a month ago the doctor made her a betadyne goatee. It was funny.
Poor Quinn. I'm glad he didn't need stitches though. Those lip injuries can be bad...I had one as a child and my dad (who's actually a surgeon) had a plastics guy at Children's fix me up and I'm so thankful now because it really could have scarred bad.
Poor little guy...it seemed like such a fun and innocent game:-)
So sorry!! All in one day too.
Glad he is okay and glad he did so well.
The manly 'stache is awesome~
I love the glue trick. I've started using it regularly! It has saved some ER trips...is that bad?
I am so glad that it was a pretty minor cut. Scary!
What a day! At least Quinn was in good spirits, imagine how bad it would have been if he had been a crying, blubbering mess?!
Oh mah heck that poor baby. What a day indeed.
Oh my goodness! Poor little guy! Glad he was so good for you at the ER...i can just imagine how my ER visit would be, well, depending on which kid it was...My children usually suffer from self inflicted wounds while trying to get away from their siblings :O)
You have such an awsome attitude during the chaos of raising trips plus one...i wish i could have that attitude, it's getting harder to fake it anymore. Please tell me it gets easier as they get older, PLEASE :O)!!!
Wow! That was rough! I hope things have improved since then.
poor guy! Glad he's ok! Ironically...my photo story was about our ER visit this week, too! Ugh! Our first (amazingly) with any one of our 3 kids.
We have a dentist appt for Jacob for next week though as he bonked his mouth a few weeks ago and now we are realizing a tooth is turning gray...uh oh! I'll post about it next week (and will try to get a photo of it! LOL!)
You might need a whole BOTTLE of wine to help erase the effects of that bad day.
Hope tomorrow's better...
Oh, I'm so glad it wasn't even worse. NOT a fun day, though. No, not at all. Great pictures though :)
So glad that he's ok! He looked to be in great spirits, but I guess the same thing can't be said for mommy. Enjoy that wine!

Oh how I hate it when my kids get injured! It always makes the day so stressful and hard- for me and the kids!
I hope to never visit the ER with my kids- but I'm sure that won't happen!
Isn't it funny how chipper and happy they can be to take a trip to the ER? I recently took my son for crayon up the nose, and he was having a ball! Must be the 1-on-1 mommy time that is so rare for our little ones!
Sounds like you had a totally awesome day. I hope you get some much needed one on one time with your pillow tonight.
Oh Jen......that was quite the day. I am so happy for you that it is over. It truly is amazing that most of us live to adulthood and very few of us maimed.
I don't drink, but I hope you had a very large, expensive bottle of your favorite wine after a day like that.
That's exactly what my sister says: Things are never so bad that they can't get worse.
It's supposed to make you cheer up, then say, "Wait - what?"
Poor Quinn! OUCH!
It's the worst, isn't it, when they are bleeding like that? (I hate, hate, hate dealing with blood! UGH!)
Glad it was easily fixed and he was such a trooper there.
Hope you had a nice couple of glasses of wine too!
Happy Friday!
Poor Quinn! A good tip from my Rugby playing husband is to apply gliserien to a mouth wound. It really stops the bleeding immediately.
So no loose teeth? Lucky boy! This reminds me of my Tuesday when after the op we had our little lip split scene.
Lol. So true.
Glad that sweet little boy is ok.
KiKi and LaLa have done the exact same thing. Seriously, they are gifted lip busters. Both of them got glued back together and have itty bitty little scars on their bottom lips.
Glad Quinn is alright. Hang in there Momma. I hear it only gets more difficult, so you might want to stock up on wine.
Goodness, Mom, we feel for you. what a day. Hang in there.
He looks fine to me too! And his little betadine beard is cute! :) Glad it wasn't serious, like the time my son ran through the house, jumped on the couch and tore his gums open...emergency dentist appt...the morning he was suppose to leave for Disney World with his Grandparents. He was fine thankfully!
Awww... poor little guy - glad he is okay and I sure hope your weekend goes better than your week has! Big hugs! :o)
I'm glad he's ok. life with kids is always an adventure. I’m making children’s books today. If you want to wander down my road I’m home.
Jonathan has made a trip to the ER in a year. It's a miracle. the last time he split his eye open after he fell against the corner of the car door, when he tripped running to see his aunt. Honestly, that moment moved in slow motion too.
We've had trips to the er for some superglued cuts too. Always a bit unnerving the first time though
love the glove shot!
my daughter had that skin glue once - she fell right on her sippy cup - bit right through her lower lip - not fun!
He looks so happy !!!
Ouch!
I'm so glad he's okay.
It looks like he thought the visit to the ER was great fun. I am so over ER visits :-)
But just think...in a few days...you will be relaxing in Vegas! When do you and Jeff arrive in town??
When it rains it pours!
The ER is the worst. Glad the visit went smoothly.
He has a muzzle like Homer Simpson. Glad he is ok.
Cute pictures! Poor kiddo...
Aweee! Poor Quinn! Glad he handled it all well! You should bring some betadine home - it may come in handy for some faux facial hair @ Halloween! :-) Hope the wine helped last night and today was better!
Poor kiddo. Good he didn't have to have stitches. Looks like he was quite the trooper thru the whole thing!
He looks happy for having such a painful sounding injury! Glad he is ok! I have had several busted lips over here and luckily they didn't need anything!
That poor little dude. He does look rather unfazed though! Tough at all?!
Betadine rocks, I am glad he is okay but isn't it scary when you can see something happening but can't get to it in time..
That sounds like a horrible day! I am glad Quinn is ok. I with you about not wanting to overreact or head to the ER unecessarily. I have only had to go the ER once with the kids and it was because of croup and pretty scary. Somehow we have otherwise avoided it. I have taken the kids to urgent care many times in the evening or weekends so I guess that minimized the ER visits.
Why is it that things always happen on an already cruddy day? Murphy - me no like your law!!
Love the ER photos - but seriously so glad that Quinn is doing ok. Mommy - you deserve some serious cocktails for this one!!
Oh my, I thought that was either blood or dried up taco sauce around his mouth!!! Good to know it was just betadine!!
Glad he's okay but yeah your day couldn't possibly get any worse. You just know when a day ends like that, you need a huge chilled glass of wine!
Ouch! For both you guys.
You probably made the doctor very happy - his first non-flu patient in over a week, I'm betting.
Oh hun, I'm so sorry. I remember reading that tweet. I'm glad he's ok. Jake did the same thing a while back, bit through his lip as he fell off a chair. Luckily, it was mostly blood and not much ouchie. But I probably should have done as you did, take him in anyway.
