When you dial a phone number it is just natural to expect to be connected with the person that you called. Sure, every now and again you dial the number wrong and get connected with someone else but that is really not the norm.
I am no different. When I dial a phone number, I expect to get connected to the person or place that I am calling. Well, I used to expect this. But now, my phone dialing expectations will never be the same.
During one of my shifts at work, a couple of the monitors that we use to keep tract of patient's vital signs weren't working properly. After switching the patients to different monitors, I got the phone number to call our customer service rep to try and fit the problem.
I dialed her number which led me to her voice mail. It stated that she would be on vacation for the next week. Well, this problem couldn't wait that long. So I called the person that she said was covering for her. The number once again led to voice mail.
This was a time sensitive matter so waiting for this woman to check her voice mail and get back to me wasn't an option. In her message, she thankfully left a number to a customer service center which could be used when she wasn't available. I listened carefully and wrote down the number.
I hung up the phone and dialed the 1-888 number she left. I waited for the automatic system to pick up the line. But when it did, I was really confused by the response.
"To speak with a live person and chat, call 1-886-XXX-XXXX."
Totally didn't expect that but I wrote the number down, hung up the phone and dialed the new number. Again, I waited for the automatic options to be told to me.
"Welcome to Live Chat. There are hot, sexy girls waiting to chat with you. Press 1 to chat with Monica. Press 2 to chat with Tiffany. Press....."
I sat there in shock as the message played on. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I hung up the phone and tried to figure out what was going on.
"Maybe, I dialed wrong? Maybe I wrote the number down wrong?" I thought as I picked up the phone and dialed the first number again. I listened to each of the voice mail messages again and verified that I had indeed written down the correct number.
Then I once again dialed the customer service center. I once again got the message to call the 'live chat' number. I once again dialed the number.
"Welcome to Live Chat. There are hot, sexy girls waiting to chat with you. Press 1 to chat with Monica. Press 2 to chat with Tiffany. Press....."
I hung up the phone completely dumbfounded by the whole situation. Now, I had two problems on my hands. I still had to figure out how to get the patient monitors fixed but now I also had to try and explain to my boss why there are people calling live sex chat hot lines from the nursing unit.

Oh my goodness. Well you could at least approach your supervisor with the story as a complaint about the terrible support service the company offers - voice mail, voice mail, recorded message, sex line. That's shocking, for a company that needs to provide customer service for such viatl equipment.
TELL your supervisor.
BE angry.
BE offended.
Because really, when it's patients' safety we're talking about, it's pretty hopeless.

Oh my goodness - imagine how the girl will feel when you report that she put up a sex chat line number in stead of their service centre number. Now that must be really embarising.
Hehehe... when Graham was in the ICU, I had called to check on him very early in the morning and instead of the hospital I'd dialed a sex line...

Maybe the girl has two jobs; one as a customer service rep and the other as a "hot sexy girl" customer service rep :) Maybe you should've pressed 1 and explained your problem. Now that would've been hilarious!

That is funny and disturbing all at the same time. I would definitely tell your boss about what happened before he starts the questioning after the bill comes...LOL!!
When I was dating my husband, the last 4 digits of his apartment's phone number just happened to be 6253....or MALE. And his area code was 801....which is very close to 800. So one day, one of his roommate's grandmas called and missed that one number (800 instead of 801) and was shocked to hear the message for a male sex line. She was horrified that her grandson would be involved in something like that. The situation was good for many, many laughs....
That is exactly what I was going to say...hope they don't monitor outgoing calls.
Oh my goodness. Can you imagine being the person who clearly recorded the number wrong on her voicemail and sent who knows how many people to a sex chat. Unless she was one of the girls of course. Moonlighting.

We have a problem at work here with a wrong number in a system. We have an 800 number that gets called ALL DAY LONG from a CVS help line. In their transfer system, they entered the wrong number by a single digit and that number is ours. So when they are helping a customer, they transfer them to this other department and instead of that department they get us!
The CVS location is in Texas and we're in So Cal so they people are always thrown off when we answer and have no accent and say we're a steel company when they are expecting a pharmacy helpline. It's a mess and CVS won't fix it because they don't believe it's true....turds.
I probably would have pushed ONE for Monica. Maybe she knew what was going on.

oh boy!! that reminds me of a funny story my hubby told me from work one day. The guys were talking about sporting equipment and Dave was going to show Paul something he was planning on getting soon. So he went to pull up the site for Dicks Sporting Goods. he typed in www.dicks.com....and then FREAKED out when a huge...well...ahem....you can imagine what...popped up on his screen. As fast as he could he just pulled the plug on his computer and RAN to his manager's office to explain what he was trying to look up. Come to find out the site is actually www.dickssports.com or something like that...lol!!!

Too funny! Our home phone is 1 number different than a rent a center and we get calls for them almost every day. Argh!
