Past and Present Pumpkin Processes

We don't usually do much in the way of Halloween preparations or decorations, much to Hayden's chagrin.
He really thinks that we should decorate the house, top to bottom in all things scary and spooky.
Me, on the other hand, I am not so convinced.

But when though, we don't decorate or even make fun Halloween crafts,
we do do
PUMPKINS!

And I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane and look at
Pumpkins of year's past.

Here they are, our little pumpkin family of three.

I thought they were cute but Hayden well, he wasn't quiet convinced.

Then again, maybe he was crying because the next year brought these guys.

But not to worry, there were still pumpkins.
Just a lot more pumpkins.

But we carved them all the same, expect for the tiny ones.
Jeff and I deemed them too small to carve.
So the next year, we bought six good size pumpkins and the plan was to have a whole
Jack 'O Lantern Family.

But even with the kids help, there were just too make to clean and carve.
So the 'mommy and daddy' pumpkin, well they were just 'shy' and had no face.

Now that brings us to this year.
We learned our lesson and got just enough pumpkins to cover the kids.
And Jeff and I were excited because we thought the kids would be gun-hoe about helping us clean them out, like last year.

I mean what kid doesn't want to get all dirty and make a mess.

Hayden, he jumped right in, almost literally.

Jake was all to happy to help.

Quinn, well, he really couldn't be bothered to help with the pumpkins.
The dinosaur stickers were just too much fun.

And Claire, she was all about helping clean out the pumpkins.
She took her shirt off so that it wouldn't get dirty.
She got up on her chair and was so ready to jump in until she saw the inside of a pumpkin.

Then I couldn't get her to touch it with a ten foot pole.
But who can really blame her, pumpkin guts are really slimy.

But not to worry, once I gave her a spoon she dug right in.

And we were able to successfully carve pretty awesome pumpkins.

If I do say so myself.

This whole pumpkin carving thing is something that my kids have not experienced (nor I, for that matter!), but I do hope that we'll get to that one day. :)

I love the photos of the little ones taking the seeds out of the pumpkins. I love that you actually carve pumpkins, I haven't done that in forever. Maybe when my son is older or not. Great photos!

This was the first year that my son was excited about having a pumpkin. He was just like Clair - ready to dive in until he actually saw the inside. I tried giving him the spoon but he just poked the outside a bit. Maybe next year. Great pics!

Those pumpkins are so great!!

My son wanted to scoop the pumpkin goo, but didn't want to touch it in the slightest. When he did...yeah he lost his mind!

It's funny to see how kids react to the pumpkin insides. Some like to play in the slime, some hate it.

Cute photos!

It was really neat seeing the history of your pumpkins:-) My daughter has off of school tomorrow and Friday and we are going to carve ours then.

BTW, you guys have some of the cleanest carving I have ever seen. I mean, the goo is still the good but your lines are almost perfect!

Great trip down pumpkin memory lane! I couldn't get either of my kids to touch the pumpkin guts this year... I have to post a pic of the one my hubby carved... really cool.

Too cute! I know it seems obvious, but I never thought to do a pumpkin for each of us. I like that idea.....we just do one pumpkin and use templates to carve it all fancy schmancy. Well, my husband does anyway. I react to the inside of a pumpkin like your precious little daughter there.

Love it! We took the easy way out this year and just did markers. William was disapointed. It is just not the same.

I ADORE carving pumpkins. One of my favorite things to do. One of the girls... i can't remember which one... HATES the slimy pumpkin guts (I'm thinkin it's Gert)... but they LOVE the carving part!!!

Those are so cute! What a great tradition.

I'm feeling like a slacker b/c we have not carved pumpkins yet.

We paint, we put foamie stickers on ours, but no carving.

Next year, I promise!

SO cool! I don't know if I'd be good at carving pumpkins. I've never done it...maybe next year when Tristan's a bit older. :)

I love that pumpkin that looks like it's cryin and throwing up pumpkin seeds! What a cute idea. Our pumpkins never turn out that adorable lol. Actually, we end up painting ours cuz NONE of us want to touch the insides lol

Pumpkin carving is one of my favorite things about fall!!!

Awww great pumpkins!! We did 1 this year and Maggie picked out the design, but wouldn't touch the insides at all. And instead serenaded us with songs from Phineas and Ferb and the Beatles.

Being overseas all their lives, my kids have NEVER seen real pumpkins...

I'm so jealous! :)

I NEED to make time to carve our ONE pumpkin. Not sure how we're gonna manage that with so many hands....but your pictures made me nostalgic. And I LOVE seeing the picture of you with your babies!

Oh Yay! Awesome pumpkins. And I LOVE your picture stories. The kids are SO cute!

Those pumpkins look great! We usually wait until the day before or day off. I am not looking forward to cleaning them out. I told hubby I would supervise this year.

I'm with Claire on this one...I won't even touch them with a spoon! I love the decorating part though!

What a cute post! I loved all the photos. My kids don't like pumpkin guts either -- they usually ask to just paint their pumpkins every year :-)

Love the little pumpkin family. The crying pic is too funny.

My kids love getting all messy in the pumpkin goo. Best part of carving the pumpkin! haha!

Yay for pumpkin families. I have some great shots of Jake doing the bare-chested scooping. It took him until this year to actually take the goop out by hand.

Great pumpkins! I love it! I took a shot of Meg crying with her hand inside a pumpkin last year it was priceless. lol

Look at those babies.

I am dying over your first pic, Jen.

Can you please make your kids stop growing now? :)

You guys do the pumpkin carving right! Very impressive - your kids are adorable and so are the pumpkins! :)

Happy WW! :)

Very cute!

We're doing the pumpking thing tomorrow (but we did go to the pumpkin patch to pick one out last weekend).

Michelle said...

Ok, I know people who never carve pumpkins with their kids. I know it is messy and potentially dangerous, but it is a crime not to carve pumpkins.

Hey, aren't you afraid your pumpkins are going to get yucky before Halloween??

Jenni said...

How adorable!

Our always come out kinda crappy...but we have such a good time carving them!

We dont really do Halloween in Australia [although the shops are trying to get us to *rollseyes*]

Your pumpkins look great :)

Perfection! You are amazing for doing that with 4 small children. Amazing.

I just loved this post! Perfect Halloween post! (And I adore the whole vomiting pumpkin ... that cracks me up!) And my son was freaked out by the inside of a pumpkin too -- we did ours today and he wanted nothing to do with it!

Jenn said...

OK, so we too do the "pumpkin family" thing...just on a much lesser scale. However this year was different. We had our pumpkins in advance sitting on the porch. We got everything all ready and we started on Aidan's. We cleaned and carved it with no problem...the issue, the other pumpkins were TOO HARD to carve. I actually BENT a butcher knife just trying to cut a hole in the top to get the seeds out! After Aaron even trying with one of his power tools we gave up and decorated the rest with stickers. Good Lord!!!

Unknown said...

cute, cute, cute! We just carved our pumpkins tonight before bedtime. My kiddos loved it last year and dove right in again this year :-)

Helene said...

You have excellent pumpkin carving skills, my friend. I especially loved the one that was puking up pumpkin seeds (that is what it was doing, right?)

I love the idea of doing a pumpkin family!! Ours already rotted b/c we put them out too early...yuck.

Helene said...

Oh and VAGINA....message heard loud and clear...LOL!

I have a 5-year-old nephew who is the same way... he'd love nothing more for his house to be spookily decorated from top to bottom. It must be the age!

So cute!

We'll be doing our pumpkins on Friday when my MIL gets here.

CaraBee said...

Great pumpkins! (Cue the Charlie Brown music.) We're doing ours tonight. Not sure if Sophie will go for it or not. She does love a mess, but she's easily distracted. I have a feeling she will start out interested and after about two minutes will be off in search of other entertainment, while I do all the work.

I love the pumpkins through the years! How fun. . .we did our first pumpkin 'family' this year and had a blast. Hopefully in a few more years, I can do a post like this. Neat!
