The Lesson of Reponsibility

There once was a boy who's parents decided to teach him about responsibility.

For his birthday, they approve of him getting a new fish for a pet.
The boy was very happy, for he loved animals so.

The family as a whole took the pilgrimage to the store to help the boy pick out just the right ones to bring home.

Each tank was studied with care.
And after many, many, many minutes the boy finally chose, three fish to be his.

He loving named them Treasure Chest, Coral and Goldie

With the new pets in tow, the family head for home.
The first order of business in being responsible for pets is to build them a home.
So with the help of this father, the boy did.

The boy was proud of his work and his new pets.

Beaming from ear to ear, he introduced his little sister and brothers to his new friends.
It was a match made in heaven.

The boy took great care of his new pet fish. Each morning upon waking he would feed his fish and each evening before bed he would feed them again.

His parents were proud of responsibility he was learning.
They smiled and congratulated each other for this good parenting move.

But there was one lesson that they did not plan on the boy learning so soon.
For you see, fish are finicky creatures and sometimes, well most of the time, they die.

Death is said and a hard lesson to learn.
The boy's mother expected tears and much sadness when the boy learned of the terrible news.
But instead the boy just looked at her and said,
"Tomorrow can we get new fish? I was kinda sick of those ones anyway."

I am sure that you were expecting the worst. I am glad that you dodged that lesson this time. He will have plenty of time for that:-)

Lol! Well at least he took it well.

Oh that sounds like something my little boy would say too! Too funny. And sad, of course.

Did he get some new fish?

I don't blame him...fish are boring! Get the boy a puppy! :)

Oh dear!! Luckily fish are cheap lol

oh no! Glad he handled it so well. We have 2 dogs and one is getting older. I, myself, have never had a pet before my dogs so I fear how I'll handle it when the time comes but I have no idea how my kids will handle it either...

Sorry about the loss, but that reaction is too cute! We have had so many pet adventures in our house...this post was very familiar to me! :) Happy WW!

Ha ha ha!! Maggie reaction was similar when her first fish died. After the THIRD fish died (all named Orange), she asked me where he went. I said he went to be with Nala (our dog that passed away) and she was fine with it, because "Nala doesn't live with us anymore."

My fish tanks always end up looking like that! Bummer.

Another day, another dollar (spent on fish!)

Oh gosh, Jen, I am so worried to get fish for teh same reason. We are terrible fish parents. But great that he is learning responsibility.

Jayme said...

We are bad fish parents. Fortunately we're better with the kids. Probably because they are more vocal about their needs...

Who are these people that can keep fish alive? I'd like to know.

Cristin said...

Of course!!

We had three fish that we completely ignored, never cleaned the tank, rarely fed them.. and they REFUSED to die. When they finally did, it took Graham days to notice the tank was gone.

I thought for sure I was gonna see a floating fish in that last picture!

Hayden cracks me up.

So, are you on your way to the pet store now?

Oh my goodness - right out of the mouths of babes - it's a wonder how little their attention spans of interest are in something isn't it! LOL

LOL, poor little fishies! I hope the next ones last a bit longer for you!

Thank you SO much for sharing this! I thought my daughter was a heartless monster because she said THE SAME THING when her goldfish died. I guess it's a kid thing. LOL

LOL! Ah, get a beta fish...they are a little more hardy and not as dirty as goldfish.

Hysterical! Kids are so resiliant and take things much different that we think they will some times!! Good luck with the new fish!

LOL! I did not see that coming. Kids are sure good at saying surprising things, aren't they! Glad he was OK with it. So did you get new fish?

Jewls said...

How hilarious! I had pet fish once...my sister and I thought grandma was joking when she told us that beta's will kill each other! I still have nightmares about that!

This post (and your blog in general) are so much more fun having met you and your husband in person, Jen.

I loved the pic of your man and your boy together.

Haha. I have to admit, fish are hard to get attached to. At least he is learning this lesson of loss before he has a pet that he really cares about.

And props to him for being so responsible with his new pets!

hahaha...when our first goldfish died, I sent my husband to the store to get a new one before the kids noticed. I just wasn't ready to explain death to a two and four year old. The second time it happened though we had a little talk about fish heaven that went surprisingly well, thank goodness!

Jennifer G. said...

Awesome! We've learned the same lesson... hehhe
