Not My Best Idea

I am full of ideas.
Some of are good ideas.
And some are not so good ideas.

Being that it is the holiday season, I am just bursting with fun holiday event ideas.
Every where I turn there is another fun holiday thing going on.

For example, one of our local malls has this huge model train set up.
There are four trains driving all around.
It is really cool.

And taking the kids to see the holiday trains,
was a really, good idea.

They were fascinated by the trains as they zoomed around the track.
I have never seen my children be so still.

Now this next holiday activity, not really one of my best idea.
I thought it would be fun to take the kids to a ceramic shop to paint ornaments.

Sure they look sweet and cute sitting there in the photos painting
and they really did enjoy themselves.

But I took three 2 year old's into a store where everything was breakable
and to top that, I gave them paint!

I should have just let a cat with a lit torch tied to its tail lose in the store.
That probably would have caused less damage.

By the end of the session, the kid were covered in paint, I was sweating, my throat hurt from whisper yelling, Jeff was threatening divorce and we had broken more ornaments than we painted.

Yeah, probably not my best idea.

It's been forever since I've done the 'paint your own' ceramics. Your photos look fun. I bet the kids had a good time and you get some cool family heirloos out of it.

Such fun times! :)

I've never been brave enough to take my little ones to anywhere with breakable items. Maybe when they're teenagers...

I was looking at crafty stuff for my middle girl(9) tonight and I thought how fun that would be for her. Then I thought of the 4 year old and quickly changed my mind. Sometimes we have good ones sometimes not.

*snort* whisper yelling is the best!

you're either really brave...or really crazy! LOL!

I had to do a lot of 'whisper yelling' at church this weekend with my daughter...oy!!

MamaHen said...

Whew, you are a braver woman than me.

LOL, I'm glad those stores weren't around when my kids were little because I would have made the same mistake you did!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Funny!

You are a great mother for actually taking your kids in public. I keep mine at home!!!!!

It's the good intention that counts, right?!

Thanks for your visit on my SITS day the other week!

I can't wait until the kids are old enough to do holiday things. My toddler is probably old enough for some stuff this year, but the baby slows us down. Maybe next year....although I'll avoid any ceramics shops.

I have decided that we're not going to even attempt any activities like that until my daughter at least pretends that she does what I say, because right now? No way in hell.

You are one brave woman! Glad you all made it out in one piece.

thanks for the tip...i'm off to find a train that is buzzing around a track so i can get the girlies to stand still!

I forgot about the train set up, we use to spend time between piano lessons last Christmas time in the "mall" watching that train go round and round! and playing eye spy! Love ceramics but it might be a date night experience, one kid at a time! I will have to show you the ornaments my kids have made over the years in art class at school, priceless! Maybe it will have to be a post?

Emily said...

Man, I wish you had it on video! :P I wish we had the trains around here....I'd give anything for my kids to stand still!

Next time just buy the ornaments and bring them home to paint. Then you can yell as loud as you want ;)

Good for you for finding fun things to do.

Ah, young grasshopper. The student has become the master.

You are now officially experienced enough to teach a class on "What to do and NOT do with small children"

ha ha

Yeah the "let's go see the trains" idea was definitely a better one. We live and we learn, right? ;)

Let's change bull in a china shop to 2 year old in a ceramic ornament store. Sounds right.

Katie said...

Ooohhhh no!!! You are very brave to take three 2-year olds anywhere, let alone a ceramics shop!!! :)

...visiting from SITS! :)

Oh! I can just picture it! I know just what you mean about the whisper screaming. I'm particularly good at it. :)

Love the cat with the torched tail! HA!

Your a great mom for trying!

I could picture it all like watching a movie. And you are awesome for attempting it. I love the idea of painting their own ornaments.

ok...so you had a temporary moment of being intellectually challenged!

It's still a tiny bit hilarious (sorry).

Since I am in the same boat, it's kinda like I am just laughing right at myself, right?

So THAT'S why all of the ornaments Maggie brings home from daycare are made out of paper :)

I'm kind of hoping to do this next year with Maggie, but she'll be 5, so hopefully old enough . . . Hopefully :)

Haha, I guess you learned your lesson! It does sound (and look!) like fun. Maybe next year they'll be a little less accident-prone?

My child would have painted for five minutes and then started climbing things and using the paint brushes as swords or laser guns.

Yeah. I agree. Bad idea for now.

Heather said...

They DO look awfully cute sitting there quietly painting...

I bet that lasted about 2.3 seconds, huh?

You are a saint. I STILL wouldn't take Gabe into a place like that.

Oops!

I'm too scared to let my kids paint.

YEs, THANK you for posting about this-
I took Joseph to a paint-your-own ceramics store last week to make something for Brian, and I just about vomited from the stress.
Seriously, I was sweating profusely,
my face hurt from fake-smiling (there were lots of other moms there) and it took Joseph like 2 seconds to paint something that cost 15 dollars.
Sucky.
I am so glad that I am not alone!

Susie said...

It's a cute idea but maybe in a couple of years:-)

Sara Elizabeth said...

Aww, I bet they had so much fun.

Alicia said...

ohhhhhh look how sweet they look though! and i totally get it...we have such good intentions...if only the kids would cooperate! lol

lsnellings said...

I bet they had a blast! totally worth a few broken ornaments! (You didn't have to pay for the broken ones, did you?)

Unknown said...

Ha Ha Ha Ha I can almost imagine the whisper yelling. The pictures do look cute though! If you would have just posted that picture, I would have been like HOLY MAMA that mother is amazing :) Oh wait, I still think that! HOLY MAMA you are amazing! Especially because you can whisper yell! You are so cool!

Helene said...

LOL!! You know I'm only laughing cuz I've attempted the same thing. It was so stressful having the 2-yr olds in a room with all breakable things. I thought I was going to go insane. Next time I'll leave them home with Tim and just take the older twins!

But you know, live and learn, right? You are amazing for just attempting it!!

Kiki said...

great pictures. we are big fans of model trains in this house. neat idea with the ornaments, too. happy WW and take care.

debi9kids said...

LOL...whisper yelling... hahaha..I'm an expert at that one :)

The trains sounded fun! Paint, not so much. UGH
(oh well, it will be fun to look back on when they are all miserable teenagers. Opps, did i say that? I mean, when they are just plain old teenagers.)

Live.Love.Eat said...

Oh yikes, maybe not a good idea but hey you get points for trying and being very very brave. And for reminding me of this awesome activity to do with my 6yo. I think he's ready and I haven't done it in so long.

Honey Mommy said...

Duly noted. I shall not take my boys to do ceramic ornaments. Now I just need to find some holiday trains!

Lani said...

ooohh I think my blood pressure went up a little just thinking about taking my trio into a place like that. But seriously- you get major points for doing that. Even if it was hard and stressful- you got out with the kids and they did something different that they enjoyed. Quite a feat with trips!

But I love that you tried it!
