But I was in the nursing program. The nursing program had a very ridged schedule and there were only a hand full of classes, besides the nursing ones, that fit into this schedule.
One of these such classes was, Outdoor Activities.
Now I need to stop and explain something about myself. I am not what you would call an 'outdoor' person. I like being outside but only for the purpose of laying around in the sun, oh and watching the kids. I am not very athletic, not into hiking and not into camping. Bugs scare me. I tolerate animals. Darkness and the noises that 'nature' makes in the night freak me out. I know it is cliche but the saying, 'My idea of roughing it is a hotel without a pool' really describes me to a 'T'.
So that being said, Why on earth would I sigh up for a class called Out Door Activities?
Well, it was my Junior year and I needed to get my last PE credit done and this was the one and only class that worked in my schedule. So I was stuck with it.
The class didn't start out so bad. The first few weeks were learning how to use a compass and survival stuff like how to make water safe to drink. But about 4 weeks into the class, I found out what the final exam was.
It was a 2 day, 1 night pack in pack out, 10 mile hike/camping trip. Where all the survival skills that we learned were suppose to be demonstrated. We were going to be 'roughing it'.
When this was announced, most of the class cheered like second graders for a pizza party. But me, I broke out in a cold sweat and had one of the two panic attacks that I have had in my life. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom because I thought I was going to vomit.
Needless to say, I was NOT excited about the trip.
The trip was set. There was no way that I was going to get out of it. I had a little less than 2 weeks to get ready. First on the agenda, choose a partner who knew what the hell they were doing.
So the time came for the trip. Most of my class mates were really excited. We were loaded onto buses and driven about 2 hours north. The plan was this, camp along a known hiking trail and hike the 10 miles to the top and canoe back down river.
Since it was late afternoon when we arrived, we would hike for 4 miles and then make camp. The next day we would hike the rest of the 6 miles to the river and then take a canoe back down the river to a set location where the vans would be to pick us up. We had to carry everything we would need for the next 2 days on our backs. The idea was pack in pack out, meaning what your brought with you was to be brought back out.
To put it politely there were NO modern conveniences including bathrooms. You had to go? Take a squat my that tree over there.
In the interest of your time, I will now list all the reasons this was THE MOST MEMORABLE camping trip I have ever taken.
- new hiking boots that gave me blisters that I still have scars from.
- Rain, lots and lots of rain.
- Losing my camp site in the middle of the woods with memories the Blair Witch Project fresh in my mind.
- Dehydration. I had the bright idea of not bringing enough water for the trip so that I would not have to pee in a hole in the ground.
- Bladder infection because I held it too long thanks to fact that I used to have a shy bladder and was not able to pee around other people.
- No way to clean oneself
- Not able to get water to boil to make Mac-n-Cheese and therefore going hungry (who brings mac-n-cheese camping?).
- my partner leaving me to canoe with a hot guy
- strong wind gusts tipping the canoe
- the vans being an hour late to pick us up
- riding in the van with broken air conditioning with 14 other people who were just hiking and had not showered in 2 days.

This lovely experience brought to you as a result

Sounds like the kind of trip to scar you for life. lol
Wow. I'm glad this was BK (before kids) so you could take some time to recover!
Doesn't it just kill you when you think about some of the stupid classes you had to take to graduate?! PE credit?!?! Unless that was your major I think it's silly.
So Jen, you are so not a candidate for a wildlife hiking trail with my hubby. Gosh, they really rough it.
OMG that sounds like such a nightmare! I'm not an outdoor type either--my one and only attempt at camping ended up at a hotel!
What a horrendous time for you! The good news is...you made it through and hey...maybe it even prepared you for motherhood. If you can survive that, you can survive anything:-)
Oh NO! *giggle*
I could not do backpack-style camping. I am more of a car camper. I fell my car up with crap and park it in my campsite. I also like a campground with flush toilets and showers. I will sleep in a tent though (with an air mattress).
HORRRIBLE! What an awful awful trip! My feet ache and my scalp itches just thinking about it!
LOL! Sounds like you probably won't be signing up to be a Scout leader anytime soon. :)
My PE credit: Racquet ball. Only danger was getting hit with the ball or someone's racquet.
I would die! I am SO not an outdoor person! I wouldn't be willing to go anywhere that didn't have a fully functioning bathroom & air conditioning.
My family took a trip to the Grand Canyon once. Driving through the dessert and using port-a-potties equal hell in my book. No thanks!
You make me smile! We are "car" campers. Actually, we just bought a queen airbed with folding frame so we don't have to sleep on the ground. We're actually planning Maggie's first real camping trip and our first in Yellowstone for early May. We will just have to watch out for the bears . ..
I think you win for the worst camping trip ever! And possibly for the worst college course ever too! :) I hope you got an A!
Doesn't sound like the worst college course ever (I'm taking that now, and it's criminally dull), but that camping trip sounds not dis-similar to my outdoor orientation experience my freshman year. Esp. the lack of water.
Weirdly, I had a great time, though...
Oh I miss camping! I've peed, pooed and lots of *other* things in the woods... sigh.... I would have rocked that trip! And I probably would have ditched you for the hot guy too... hehehehe...
Whew! I am totally not a camping person but if I was that experience would scare me away! Glad you got out alive! lol
ahahahaha...good story and sorry about those scars! bleh, those must have been some really nasty blisters.
I can't pee outside. Must use a flushing toilet. Not a port-a-potty either. That thought is making me want to vomit.
love the tub cologe(sp) so much fun going on!!
You and I would of been perfect partners. I would never want to go camping... not in this lifetime anyway.
Excellent prompt!!
i hate hiking and camping outdoors...unless of course, there's a camper with a refrig and AC and beds with a flushing toilet. that kind of camping is just fine.
mac and cheese? really?
yeah, after all that I would hate camping too! I wouldn't want to hike ten miles just to camp. Camping is such a grubby dirty experience, it's just not that fun.
I'm not sure why but I have always thought it was weird to have to take PE in college - that PE was a "requirement" by that stage in life! Sounds miserable - I am glad you survived!
This is hilarious, especially that your partner left to canoe w/ a hot guy. (: I feel the same way about "roughing it". I'm not rough.
One of my PE credits in college was Modern Dance, and I got a B-!!!! In DANCE!
After that experience, I might not even go outside again!
I like your idea of camping too! Not a fan of roughing it! Not a fan of peeing behind a tree!
LOL, I would rather do what you did than get all dressed up in a dress and heels ANY DAY! Stick me outdoors and I am happy.
like you - I don't do camping!!
LOL that is sooooo me. I HATE camping. I am a total city girl and there is no changing that!
I don't mind camping, but I have a few requirements: Running water within 100 yards of our campsite. My cell phone gets reception. And not more than two days.
So did you get an A?
The one and only time I ever camped involved fishing, also. And wouldn't you know it...I got a fish hook stuck in my palm and had to have it surgically removed. So much for the outdoors life!
And I thought my camping story was bad ... I think we are both in recovery from these early camping experiences!
And I thought I hated camping more than anyone else in the world possibly could.
You win.
I agree roughing it is definitely a hotel without a pool not out in the middle of nowhere
I'm not an outdoorsy person either - though I do enjoy camping occasionally (occasionally being every 5 or so years).
We took the girls canoeing over the summer, which was the WORST experience of their life.
But the memories... like yours... will stay with them forever!
Um... so with ya on that one... I don't camp.. unless you count Motel 6 or said "motel" of any kind.. I live in SETX... It's too hot to camp.. and the bugs are GIANT
