"Mom!" Hayden yelled from across the house. "What was that?"
All the commotion of the yelling and the thundering startled Claire and she ran whimpering onto the couch and hide her face.
"Don't worry, Hayden. Its just thunder and some lightening. We are having a thunderstorm," I reassured him.
"Well, I don't like storms. They make me afraid" he said.
"Come here, sit with me" I said and he walked over across the room and climbed up onto my lap. I pulled Claire up from the corner of the couch that she was hiding in and set her next to me. "You don't have to be afraid. We are in our nice, safe house and the thunder can't get us in here."
"It can't?" he asked. By now Jake and Quinn were interested in what was going on and climbed up onto the couch as well.
"No. The storm is outside and we are inside so we are safe in here. There is no need to be afraid." I reassured him.
"But it is still kinda scary," He said.
"Yeah, I know," I said. "But did you know that when I was a little girl, that I was afraid of thunderstorms too? I did not like them one bit until my Grandma told me something that helped me."
"What?" he questioned.
"She told me that when I was afraid, I should trust in Jesus."
He looked at me with a puzzled look on his face so I tried again.
"When I was little and there was a storm, rumbling and thundering, outside. I used to run and hide my face until it was over. And sometimes, I would even cry. But my Grandma told me that I didn't need to do that because Jesus would protect me and keep me safe from the storm. She told me to say those words over and over again and that was my prayer to Jesus and He would keep me safe and make me not afraid anymore. What to try and say it with me?"
"Yeah" he said with a giggle in his voice.
"When I am afraid," I began.
"When I am afraid," he repeated.
"....I will trust in Jesus."
"...I will trust in Jesus!" he exclaimed.
"When I am afraid, I will trust in Jesus. When I am afraid, I will trust in Jesus." I said again and again until repeated it with me.
"There do you feel better?" I asked.
"A little bit. But Mom, are you sure Jesus can protect us better than a robot dog? A robot dog could do a better job."
"No, Hayden." I said with a smile. "A robot dog would not be able to protect us like Jesus could because a robot dog couldn't make the storm stop like Jesus just did. Go and see."
"Oh yeah," he said as he ran to the window to look out, "But can we still get a robot dog?"
"I don't know, go ask your Dad." I said with an exasperated sigh.

Oh that is a great motto for life. I will re- inforce it for myself too.
Boy that sure beats my motto...
When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad
I think I'll opt for yours...and a robot dog DOES sound pretty cool.
what a touching moment, Jen! That's making me tear up a bit...
That is a perfect post. Perfectly captures parenthood!
I love it ... beautiful. One of the things I fear I've failed at as a mother is effectively communicating Jesus' love for them. I've been very good at communicating "rules" and "virtues" but not good enough at communicating the depth of His love and His desire for relationship. Fortunately, I still have time ... and hope to have more conversations like the one you had! ;0)
awww. these are my absolute favorite kinds of conversations with my kids :)
One of these days they'll appreciate our deep wisdom.
Like when they have their own children. =)
A robot dog! That's pretty funny. Thank goodness we've got Jesus though. Robot dogs could turn nasty ...
That is great! I love conversations like that! Someday they are going to get it!
What a beautiful teachable moment until that darned robo dog!!
You're setting a good foundation there even if they don't completely get it yet. :)
That is adorable...I love it!
What a fabulous and beautiful teaching moment for you!
Funny you should mention a robot dog, I just saw one of those I-dog things on Craigslist. LOL!
Your such a good mother.
I love having conversations like that with my kids!
Sarah is terribly afraid of loud noises so with the storms this weekend - she can now add thunder to her list of fears. We've been telling her not to worry - its a Band playing drums in teh clouds or Jesus bowling (which is what my parents told me...that He was bowling with my Grandpa...)...shes' not buying it yet! LOL!
Love the campaign for Robot Dog though!
Haha! Nice try! =)
I love me some Hayden...
I shall remind him:
Jesus first.
Robot Dog, second.
It's just the way He designed the world, after all.
Ha ha ha. Who would have known that robot dogs have such powers?
Hmmm. How about Jesus AND the robot dog!! That would surely be a winning combination :)
Who wouldn't want a robot dog? No poop and evidently they're good guarddogs.
I just absolutely love this post.
Miles would do the same thing (does the same thing) when I ask him to pray for peace and protection. He starts talking about superheroes. He still isn't sure if he should believe me when I say that God is the ultimate superhero.
Awwww, you are such a sweet mom! The fact that you took the time to sit with them and comfort them warms my heart. I'm mean...I'm usually like "a little thunder and lightening never hurt anyone...now go upstairs and clean your room".
Well, you tried. Jesus has some stiff competition from robot dogs.
LOL Robot dog! heehee What will he think of next??? Hayden cracks me up!
ps I wonder if we were having the same conversation at the same time. We had thunderstorms and Emma was freaking out...
Oh man, that kills me! A robot dog?! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!
