Writer's Workshop: The First Time

For this Writer's Workshop, I am going to tell you about the first time I locked myself out of our house. Did I mention that I locked myself out and Hayden inside?

A little over 4 years ago, we moved into our current house. We moved in the week before Hayden's first birthday. It was stressful time. We had been living in a condo for about 6 months before our house was ready. We needed a bigger house but never expected our old house to sell so quickly. So while our current house was built, we rented a condo.

I was so excited to move into our house. I loved our new house but I had not quite figured out all the tricks to everything. One morning, I was cleaning up Hayden's breakfast and I opened the back door, which someday will lead to a deck, to shake out the rug and Hayden dropped one of his toys out side.

I thought about leaving it out there but he was so sad and kept asking for it. So I slipped on a pair of Jeff's boats and walked around to the back of the house to get the toy. Hayden was standing at the window watching me, I played peek-a-boo with him for a while and decided to go back into the house. I was getting cold and the tee-shirt and sweat pants aka pajamas with no bra, I had on.

I walked back around to the front of the house and opened the door. Only it would not open. I tried again, nothing. I tried one more time because surely the first two times were a mistake. I reached for the knob but it would not turn. The door was locked!

I was locked out and Hayden was locked in! My mind began to race and I could feel the panic beginning to raise up in my chest. Stay Calm, Stay Calm. I took a deep breath and tried to think, meanwhile I had walked to the front of the house so that I could at least look in on Hayden. He was sitting playing with toys completely oblivious to what was going on.

Finally, I mind came up with a solution. Jeff, I need to call Jeff! He only works five minutes away and could come and unlock the house. Now, how do I call him. Where is my cell phone when you really need it? Locked in the house of course.
I decided that I would run up to a neighbor's house. A neighbor who I did not know because we had just moved in but I had to use a phone.

So I ran up the street to the nearest neighbor's house, holding 'the girls' tightly to my chest as I ran. Remember, no bra so I had to do something so that I would not get hit in the chin as I ran.

I knocked on her door, she game me the once over (as well she should have. I was quite the sight, pajamas on, over sized boots, bed head, and I don't think that I had brushed my teeth yet) and listened to my story. She agreed to let me use her phone. I called Jeff, of course he was not at his desk and would not answer his cell phone.

I called the building security and them go and look for him. He was in a meeting that was interrupted by security telling him about how his wife locked herself out of the house and the 1 year old inside. Every one had a good chuckle at that one.

So long story short, Jeff came home, unlocked the door. Hayden was fine. While I waited for Jeff, he and I again played peek-a-boo at the window. My neighbor was so sweet, she sat with me until Jeff got there. Hayden was not phased by the whole ordeal at all, thank God!

This was the first time that I was locked out of my house but not the last, darn door. But now at least my mom has a key, my sister has a key and 2 sets of neighbors have a keys. But just my luck they will all be gone at the same time.

Oh no.... I know that feeling of panic!! When my son was 6 weeks old, i had put him in the car and closed the door and then realized that all the doors were locked. Luckily he was asleep and I did have the car on (i know that's a big boo-boo in itself), but I was.freaking.out. I had to leav ehim there, run inside and call the fire department...who ended up having to "spider web-crack" the window because no slim jim would work!!
Ohhhh, the adventures in motherhood!! :)

I've never locked myself out of my own place but have locked myself out of a house where I was babysitting...with the two kids. Fortunately, the mom had told me a long time before that that they had a spare key and the kids knew where it was, so we were soon back in the house.

Thank goodness I have a keyless entry.

But you know my favorite part of this whole story was the visual image I had of you running sans bra, holding your boobs. Because I do this all the time and I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my floppage.

How funny! Great story--I bet your new neighbor had a few opinions about you after that first impression ;) Thanks for the comment on mine!

That would've freaked me out.

Holy crap! How scary! That happened to me once in my van after I loaded the groceries in, I shut the door to go to the driver's side and I hear the 'click' of the locks! Liv had pressed the door lock button!! I was standing outside the van coaching her on how to unlock the darned thing so I could get in!! Some guy just walked past laughing!!! Jerk!

LOL!! Hilarious. Of course only if it happens to someone else!! :) My 3 year old son locked me out one day! Luckily I was on the phone at the time so I at least had the phone with me! But after much begging and pleading he eventually turned the lock and unlocked the door.

Oh my, Oh my. What a dilemma!

But very funny!

Scary stuff. I've had that happen before but thankfully another door had been unlocked. Being with no bra is the worst. I'd be a little obscene. Whenever someone comes to the door after muh girls have been unleashed I always fold my arms which might make me appear to be a little strange but it's better than giving someone an eyeful!

I'm still laughing at you running down the road holding onto the 'girls'! :-)

It's good to know that there are other 'real' mom's out there!

You paint such funny visual pictures with your words - I love it! Great story!

That was hilarious! It was a crappy situation to be in but hilarious! :)

Scary and funny.... you've done a great job writing down this story. Poor you - what a way to meet your neighbor!

I would have totally freaked out..lol

That is hilarious (since the little one was ok, of course). I locked myself out in the winter with no bra on and the only person that could come help me was my father in law. That was great!

Do feel bad. I locked my youngest in the car with it running!! Great!

great story...i've locked myself out too...but i was able to get in quickly enough not to have to cal anyone...though the screen on the door needed to be replaced. ;-)

That is the greatest way to meet your neighbour! I love it.

Glad that Hayden was not phased by it in the least. That's usually the way, isn't it. Moms get freaked out (deservedly so) but the kids are oblivious.

Great story.

Thanks for stopping by (and commenting!) on my BATW day!

And don't feel bad about the house thing. Our doors lock automatically so I do it ALL THE TIME!

That is one of my greatest fears! A friend of mine was letting her one year old daughter play with her keys the other day while she loaded up their groceries at the grocery store. Can you see where this is going? Of course, she hit the lock button. They had to call the fire department. Much like Hayden, her daughter was completely fine for her experience but mom was totally freaking out. That would be me.

Everytime I have to go into the garage I take a set of keys with me because I am afraid the girls will lock me out of the house and then sit on the other side of the door and laugh!! Glad your story ended well with Hayden not phased by any of it. What a way to meet your neighbor though!

Yikes! Those stories are always the best – in retrospect!

I just posted one the other day about my 2 year old locking me in my own room (on the second floor). Yours was funnier, I didn't have to actually see anyone in my state of SAHMness. My computer is in my room so I actually posted one asking people how to pick the lock (at that moment) hoping someone was reading right then and could help because NO ONE was answering their cell phones that could rescue me.

I linked to this post on my blog. Hope you don't mind.

how terrifying!

that is one of those stories that can be retold a million times and still be funny--now that it's over. :)

Thank God you got a hold of him!!! And at least now it's a great story...maybe slightly embarassing, but still great. :)
