"Can I Be In Charge?"

"Mom, please, Please, PLEEEEASE! Can you leave me in charge? I am 5 years old now. I can do it."

"Sure fine, Hayden. You can be in charge. Now what movie do you want to watch?" I asked with an exhausted sigh.

There was at least 45 minutes, 60 tops, left of Jake, Quinn and Claire's nap time and all I wanted was to lay down for 20, maybe 30 minutes and take a power nap.

"Now sit nicely and watch your movie. I am going to lay down." I instructed as I left the room.

"Alright, Mom. But I am in charge, right Mom?" Hayden called after me.

I mumbled something to him, hoping that he would just be quiet. The siren song of my bed was just too strong and I couldn't ignore it any more. I wanted to curl up in the covers and go to sleep.

As I pulled the covers back and got into bed, I heard Claire moaning on the baby monitor. I thought nothing of it because she will do this every so often in her sleep. Once I was in bed, snuggled up tight, I listened again.

Nothing. Silence.

"Yippee!" I thought to myself, "This is actually going to work. Power nap, here I come."

I closed my eyes and willed myself to sleep as fast as possible when I heard this over the baby monitor, "Claire. Claire. Its alright, honey. You can get up now. Mommy is asleep and I am in charge. Come on downstairs with me."

Really, I rolled my eyes in my head. I guess I forgot to give Hayden the memo about Claire's moaning.

"Come on, Quinn. You can come too." I again heard Hayden on the monitor. I listened to the kids walk downstairs. I was hoping that they would just watch the movie and I could still get my power nap. There was still hope for this nap.

"WHAAAAAAA!" I heard Quinn's distinctive 'Mommy where are you?' cry.

"Here Quinn, I will take you to Mommy. She is in her bed. See, Hi Mommy, here she is. Get up there and jump on her." And with that statement. I resolved never to leave Hayden in charge again.

Good bye power nap. Someday, we will be together again.

Hey, at least it made for a funny blog post. I guess he just needs more detailed instructions next time. Like - don't come into mommy's room unless someone is bleeding type advice.

One thing I have learned - never think it is going to work, even when you are already in bed. Only in retrospect after you had that nap, can you think it will work.

Oh the wonderful power naps! Give it about one more year then maybe you will be able to get one... maybe :)
He sounds like he did as good of a job as a 12 year old baby sitter we had once. When we came home at 11:00, Alex was awake watching a show.. I guess Alex woke up and was crying crying so she brought her downstairs with her and turned on a movie for her.

When I leave my 8 year old in charge, she becomes a drill sargent & someone ends up crying.

You knew that was gonna happen. There is something about trying to get the smallest nap in that immediately causes the universe to conspire against you. I'm convinced of it.

Ummm yeah, remind me NEVER to hire Hayden as my babysitter. Hahaha...poor mama.

LOLOL That's my favorite thing to hear when I'm trying to sleep!

Too cute! He isn't on your side! I actually just figured out that my oldest child isn't on my side and wrote a post about it.

Thank you for visitng my blog!

Maybe you could just put him in charge of HIMSELF that way if the babies wake up, then it's not his job. Or just wait a few more years until he values his sleep as much as we do. LOL!

Now if he could just be the master of his OWN destiny and not everyone else's! HA!

Hope you and the power nap are reunited sooner than later...

too funny - I get the sneaking in (which of course I hear) and the crawling over to my bed and a tap on my eyelids - are you sleeping?

How do kids know the minute you fall asleep?

I love how you refer to your power nap like a lost lover:-)

TO funny! Mainly because 1. my kids fight over being in charge too 2. sometimes when my hubby is napping that is exactly what i tell me kids to go do to wake him up! guess he sometimes wishes I was not in charge lol

I hardly ever attempt to nap during the day. Because everytime I do, someone wakes up... I swear the little goobers have mommy-nap radar...

Hazel Nut said...

Oh no, I am sorry lol. I have given up on trying to get naps. The other day I fell asleep helping my 6 yr old with his homework. Every few minutes he had to tap me on the shoulder, poor kid.

Hope you get some rest soon!

Maybe he needs a few rules when he's in charge?

I hate when naps don't work out.

Didn't that happen at my house? No? Oh--it just sounds so familiar.

I have tried the power nap many times. Even with one child at home now, I sometimes try to convince him to lay down with me for a few minutes. He's even welcome to watch a movie in my room as long as I can close my eyes. Inevitably, I will get poked and prodded and questioned til I give up.

Yesterday, I was sucessful in getting a nap with AJ. And when I woke up, he had peed in my bed. Revenge??

Darn it....nap time for mommy is SO important. But, it sounds like Hayden is definitely a candidate for babysitter-in-training :)

The trick is to tie them up and lock them in a room so you can catch a few winks. Give them some treats and put a movie on and all will be ok.......

Helene said...

Oh man, that's happened here a few times too. Next time, just go over the rules with him beforehand...like thou shalt not wake any slumbering children, no matter what.

Unknown said...

lol!! so nice of him to take over for you!

Oh, I laughed out loud at this one. Not only because it's funny, but because I have totally felt that pain!

I wish I could send you a big fat package of instant sleep so that you could grab the equivalent of 4 hours in only 3 minutes. Someone should invent that!

I am impressed he asked to be in charge...my kids just assume it is a given.

Too funny! He was trying so hard though. I love how he says go up there and jump on her.

Now we know what happens when you leave a 5 year old in charge! How funny!

I can't believe you still fall for the "I think I can sneak in a nap' thing!

My youngest are only almost-3 and 5 months, but I'm already learning that the older will ALWAYS wake the younger. Funny, I was worried about the opposite being true. *eye roll*
