Starbucks Speak

So it is no secret, my love for coffee. My brain doesn't start functioning until the first drop of that sweet nectar hits my stomach and is absorbed into my blood stream.

I love the taste of it. I love the smell of it. I love how a cup of coffee fits in my hand, the warmth it gives me. I love its kick and get up and go. I just love. I have written about my love before and how I was reduced to a little pile of weepy mush when Jake spilled an entire pot.

I just love coffee. Ok, so maybe my it is more than love. Maybe, I am totally and utterly addicted but you know what, I don't care. Everyone has to have at least one crutch and coffee is one of mine.

Normally, I am happy with just a cup a black coffee. Sometimes, I like it with a little Splenda because Splenda makes coffee taste even better. I don't know how its possible but it does. But every now and again, I like to go for a froo froo coffee especially during this time of year when Starbucks has its holiday specials like Pumpkin Spice Latte or the Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha.

Mmmmm.... mocha.

But since I only go into Starbucks upon occasion, I usually get all confused with how to order my drink. I don't know the lingo. What I want is a medium sized, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, with skim milk, not too hot, no whipped cream and only a little bit of peppermint.

And that is just how I order. But what is repeated back to me sometimes sounds like a foreign language.

Starbucks Girl: "Hi, what can I get for you?"

Me: "I would like a medium sized, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, with skim milk, not too hot, no whipped cream and only a little bit of peppermint, please.

SG: "So you want a Grande Peppermint White Chocolate non fat, no whip, no foam, half shot, luke-warm mocha?"

Me: "Um, yeah that."

I am never sure what I am really going to end up with in my cup but so far, it has always been what I wanted. Maybe some Starbucks speak lessons would be helpful?

I did a Starbucks post not too long ago too. Absolutely *love* the place... & the coffee... & the green tea frappuccinos too. When the sweet darling utterly adorable red cups came out, I thought I was going to cry. "The Christmas season has arrived!!" I shouted from the housetops!! :-P

I share your passion. We are one.

*heh*

Enjoy!

I used to refuse to speak Starbucks--but I'm there so often I've finally embraced it!

LOL! I am SO there with you! I love me some coffee, but RARELY go to Starbucks and when I do, I order just like you do ;)

It is so true! I am always in such a daze when I order, overwhelmed by choices and unable to articulate anything. Sounds to me though if you wrote that you must have the lingo down pretty good!

The medium sized, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, with skim milk, not too hot, no whipped cream and only a little bit of peppermint sounds SO GOOD that I wouldn't want them stuffing up my order.

I'd probaby type out little cards that said "medium sized, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, with skim milk, not too hot, no whipped cream and only a little bit of peppermint" so that when I went to Starbucks I could pop one on the counter and say, "I'll have that please."

I really don't like coffee truth be told. Sacrilege, I know! But I can only drink the froo froo drinks... my drink of choice is a Decaf Venti Soy Latte, extra foam and two sugars in the raw. Only place to get it is as Starbucks!

Have you ever seen You've Got Mail? There is a funny scene in that movie where Tom Hanks is talking about the Starbucks lingo. I usually go for the Tall nonfat White Mocha with no Whip. Yummy!

Hey as long as you get what you want in the end :)
I used to feel the same way when I went to Cafe Rio. You have to order so quickly and know what you want and all the right things to say, at least it sure feels that way.

The worst is finally getting the lingo down and then asking for a Grande whatever at a different coffee shop! Oh the sneers I get!

I'm so addicted to S'bucks. Tall gingerbread latte, non-fat, with whip!

Venti Vanilla Roiboos Latte Sweetened girl here. Think I need to run out and get one...N O W.

I can totally relate! I don't drink coffee but I do enjoy a good mocha every now and then. I have the no whip non fat lingo but I always get tripped up with the size. A small shouldn't be called a tall....it just confuses me. :)

I just get a grande vanilla no water chai...but I'm very tempted to try the 2 pump and so and so degrees to my order. How do people figure this out?

My niece took me to Starbucks on black Friday. I got a hot chocolate. A "tall" white chocolate with 3 pumps of mocha. Well whatever, it tasted yummy.

I have no idea how to speak Starbucks. No idea at all.

I NEVER - EVER - drank coffee before I became a Mom...and even then not really until I went back to work...now I cannot leave for work w/o a cup! I could survive without it but it just makes the day start off better - especially in these cold winters!

But...seeing as how I'm a pretty new coffee drinker - I stick to my usual (which is easy since we have a Flavia machine that I can doctor up a sweet cup of joe). I LIKE starbucks but rarely go there b/c I have no idea what I'm ordering either! LOL! I work near a Tim Hortons so I usually just go there...its easier to figure out but yeah...not quite as good!

I could tutor you if you want :-)

My coffee addiction only started 1 1/2 years ago but it is fierce now! Sometimes I regret being so addicted but I really LOVE my coffee.

Cute. I have to say I'm not a fan of Starbucks though, don't like Dunkin Donuts coffee either...I'm a coffee snob...

I'm not much for coffee, but I do enjoy their Chai Latte. Super yummy. I love all their lingo, though. There must be a dictionary or something that goes with the Starbucks training manual.

Unknown said...

Their sizes make no sense to me at all. Why is grande not a large?

Farmers Wifey said...

I'm a tea drinker myself, and I don't drink coffee, but I adore the smell. It's kinda like how I feel about beer, love the smell but don't like the taste!

Oh by now you know what I want to say - Why oh why is Starbucks not in South Africa?

Lisa @ Boondock Ramblings said...

Our closest Starbucks is a half an hour away so I drive through McDonalds and all I have to say is "Hot chocolate. Whip cream on top. thank you."

Try that...not as good, but no special lingo needed. :-)

CC said...

Whatever. As long as it tastes fab. ;)

Next time you are at Starbucks you have to try the London Fog. It's an earl grey latte. I stopped drinking coffee last year when I quit smoking and this has replaced my cup of joe! Yum!!
You'll love it!

I have Irish triplets, so it's nice to follow a mommy who is half crazed as I am!

I heart Starbucks... seriously, utterly, truly.

I visit in every country I can... my girls know it's my vice. My husband knows I'd divorce him if he ever speaks badly about the place.

My dad is always embarrassed when I send him for my drinks...
