Trick or Treat

It was finally time to get ready to go to my parent's house to go trick or treating. Hayden was so excited. I pulled all the costume together and Hayden came over to approve my work.

"Mom? Where's my Darth Vader costume?"

I looked at him with shock, 'What? Well, I don't have a Darth Vader costume for you. Remember, we got you this sword and shield?"

"But Mom, I told you that I wanted to be Darth Vader," he whined at me.

"Hayden, we talked about this on Monday at the store. You wanted the sword and shield," I tried to remain calm because it was about two hours before we would be actually going out and there really wasn't time to get him something new.

"But I told you, " he said as his lip began to quiver. I could see the tears start to form.

"I am sorry Hayden, this is all I have. You are just going to have to use the sword." And with my response, he ran crying up stairs to his room.

I looked at Jeff and he looked at me, "What are we going to do?"

We did the only thing that we could, rack our brains for a costume that would be cool enough to satisfy the needs of a five year old and consist of items that we had on hand.

The one suggestions that we came up with was a Scare Crow. I said a little prayer that Hayden would like the idea as we went in to share it with him.

And thankfully he did, really, really did.

So I give you Hayden the Scare Crow, Quinn the Dog, Jake the Lyon and Claire the Princess.

The rest of the night went seeming smoothly, we even captured a picture of all six kids (my sister's two included) in full costume.

But there was this one house the really scared the kids. It was not because it was all decked out in spooky decorations, no it was because of the dog.

I heard the dog barking fiercely as we approached but it was no where to be seen. The owner opened the door to hand out the candy and then the dog came running fully speed at us. Thankfully, it was contained in the house and came no where near the kids but it was pretty scary none the less.

Which was evidenced by the comments of the kids. Jake, Quinn and Claire screamed at the top of their lungs, "Ahhhh! Doggie get me! Doggie get me! Ahhhhhh!"
and Hayden, well he told me, "Mom! That dog was so scary that my eyeballs fell right out of my head!"
Once everyone was calmed down and eyeballs were returned to their rightfull sockets, we were able to continue on.
And had have a pretty good night.

How many ways can you spell Cutie Patootie? SITS sent me by, and I'm glad they did!

Sorry the dog scared your little guys but almost worth it to hear Hayden say that! :)
And I am impressed, when it comes to Halloween I have the hardest time getting a picture of both of my kids in their costumes at the same time.. they are just ready to go.

I think we went to that house, too! It made it out the door and thankfully right past the children to pee in the yard...gotta love it! Your scarecrow turned out great!

So sweet! Your Hayden says the funniest things.

We had a costume meltdown/change at the last minute too. And I made a mental note to have a back up next year....

Dogs scare me too....

LOL - fell right out of his head... THAT is scared! TOo cute!

I don't think we've ever had a halloween that didn't begin with someone having some sort of costume breakdown.

I realize this is a bit off topic...but...ahem...that vest that you found for Hayden to wear?? That's not ummm...actually worn by anyone on a regular basis is it?? It's just uhhh...well...it shouldn't be.

All of them are stinking adorable...and I think it's a Halloween rule that at least one child freaks out at the last minute because they don't want to be the one thing they begged to be a month earlier.

What a crisis...only second to a Christmas morning wrong present crisis! Good improv momma.

Ok, Kat just makes me laugh! :)

Great pics! Way to save the day mom and dad! And a scare-crow - who would have thunk that ruled the sword and shield :-) And - I'm just a bit curious....whose closet did the vest come from...and when was it worn last ;-)

I'm impressed you got all the kids in costume at one time. That's impressive! They look adorable.

I had to laugh, because in the small group we went trick or treating with last night, there was a lion... a puppy... and a (wait for it, wait for it) princess!

However, you were far more successful getting the kids to sit and smile for the camera!

Way to save the day with the costume suggestion. Kids are so funny sometimes! I was lucky that mine had decided what he wanted to be nearly a year ago!

very creative! i'd have shoved my kids butt in the costume, so you are a much more caring mom than I!

So he didn't want to be a soldier or whatever, because he wanted to be Darth Vader, but he was okay with a scarecrow? I will never *get* kids.

Hayden is so funny! And the kids look great (good thinking with the scarecrow). :)

Oh my goodness, just when I thought your kids couldn't get any cuter!

My hubby stayed home to hand out candy and I took the poodle with me so that she wouldn't bark each time someone came to the door.

I think her big black furry face did scare a few kids that walked by her.

He wanted to be Darth Vader...but not carry a sword. But a scarecrow was a great other option? Oh, the mind of a child. Kinda like Madalyn in her choice to be a skeleton this year. When she started out as wanting a princess costume. I am still scratching my head...

Glad you had fun and everyone ended up happy with their costumes-I think my 4 yr old wore 3 costumes in 2 days because she couldn't make up her mind. Stopping by from SITS to say hi!

Poor Hayden! Glad you were able to save the day with a back up costume! good quick thinking!

The kids' teachers asked J&S what they were going to be last week. They both replied correctly but their teachers didn't hear them correctly. Sarah said "Pebbles" but her teacher said "What? A Pillow?" So...from then on anytime someone asked her what she was going to be, she said a Pillow...sheesh! LOl! Thankfully Jacob got "Bamm Bamm" right!

We didn't get to trick or treat...Sarah came down with a fever and was sick all weekend :-( Next year will be fun with all 3 up and running though, I'm sure!

They all look so cute! And good job on the off the cuff creativity for the scarecrow. I remember my brother coming home from school one day and announcing that he had a book report the next day (that he'd known about for weeks and failed to mention) that required him to be dressed in a dog costume. Thankfully my mother has always been quite the seamstress. But my, the headache he gave her.

Found you through SITS!

The kids all look adorable!!! I love the stuff that comes out of Hayden's mouth....that kid is FUNNY!!!!

Glad you all had fun (with the exception of the scary dog!)

They looked absolutely stunning! I love Hayden's "eyes fall out" comment.

I'm glad his eyeballs returned to where they should have been. But to be truthful, eyeballs hanging out is sticking to the halloween theme don't you think??

Sassy pulled that on me last year, so she was a Hula dancer at school & a "redneck woman" that night. Is that bad that's the best we came up with? Your kids are too cute. And a tip for the future, have a spare costume for each child.

Great costumes!! Glad all turned out well with Hayden's costume. So far, we have not had any meltdowns like that as once Maggie decides on something (Halloween costume or Christmas present), she rarely changes her mind.

look at your costumes! Love them! was it cold by you - it was freezing by us!!!

I'm impressed that you were able to come up with another costume on such short notice! What a bunch of cuties!

Glad the kids had fun despite the scary dog and that everyone's eyeballs are secure again! ; ) That kid cracks me up -y'all must be in stitches all the time!

Glad you guys had a nice Halloween. They look so cute in their costumes. You handled the costume change better than me. I probably would've made him wear it anyways but I ask my kids over and over before they decide and tell them once we buy the costume that is it. I don't think we have ever had anyone want to change at the last minute thank goodness.

Your gang is beyond cute. Those costumes all look super.

And isn't there always one house that is either obviously scary or they open the door and something scary happens, like they've dressed up really scary or something? I hope the "dog incident" is quickly forgotten.

Stopping by from the SITS Halloween Parade :o)
