When it came time to start feeding the babies solid foods, I made the decision that I was going to make my own baby food. It was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. And I don't know why, it took me having triplets to consider it. I really regret not doing this for Hayden.
Making your own baby food is so easy, you won't believe it! Trust me on this one, I was able to do it and I had triplets plus one.
Lets discuss. Here are some of the benefits, in my book.
When you make your own baby food, the food you serve your baby actually tastes like the vegetable or fruit and not just some watered down version. Plus you know exactly what is in there because you are controlling the ingredients.
The texture is closer to that of actual food so the transition to pieces of solid food it easy.
Kids will not turn their noses up to vegetables and fruit once self feeding starts because they are used to the tastes and textures of these foods because they have been eating this from day one. At least this is my experience with my own kids and that of my friends.
The cost. The cost alone is, in my book, a huge reason to think about making your own food, especially if you are a mother or multiples. For example, we estimate that a 6 week supply of baby food, the national best selling brand, would cast about $50. The same supply of home made baby food, using frozen, canned and fresh fruit and veggies, would cost about $20. See, see, less than half the price! Now who doesn't like saving money?
Now, onto how.
So those were the reasons that I chose to make my own food. Now I would like to show you who easy it is.
First, gather your supplies.

I likes using frozen veggies and canned fruit (in lite syrup) when I couldn't get fresh. And since that babies started eating this food in the winter, frozen worked great.
Then cook the vegetables and fruit is using fresh. If using canned, just pour into a bowl or food processor or blender for mixing.

Blend, Mix, Puree, Go Baby Go.
This was Jeff's favorite part. I would cook and he would Puree.
And Viola..... Home made Baby Food!

Confused by the bags? Well, all this food was made for my sister and her son. She came over for a lesson in baby food making and had to take the end product back home. Bags are much easier to transport then ice cube trays, trust me.
See, They Love It!

(These photos are exactly one year old! Grandma is feeding the babies.)
I would really urge you to consider this process if you have a child close to eating solid foods. It is really worth it! And if I can do it, then so can you.
I also found 2 books that were really helpful resources. These books were my baby food making Bible's Go Check them out (just like the image for the link).

You are so GOOD! And driven! None of my kids really liked babyfood from the store so I used a food grinder and they ate a lot of what we did.
That's great! I didn't make my own baby food for Trevor, but I'm planning to with Tyler. Wasn't sure where to start! You rock! Thanks!!
Wow. Great post. I have actually been wanting to try homemade baby food. I didn't with my first two, but want to with number 3. Thanks to your advice and guidelines, I'm going to give it a shot!
Wow...looks good enough to eat! Seriously! :)
I have been thinking I wanted to start doing this. I think, as you said, that it will make the transition to real food easier. I hope.
Fantastic - you are amazing!! I made my own baby food too, but I only had one at a time. You rock!! And I agree with you on all the reasons you cited. I wouldn't have done it differently.
I wish I could go back in time and do this for Dottie...
I made my own baby food too! It was sooooooo much cheaper than the jarred stuff.
It looks a lot easier than I thought! I am totally going to try this with my next baby!
You are such a good mommy! Man, you make it look so easy. How the heck do you manage that?!
You rock!
I made baby food for #3 in my awesome Vita-mix. I LOVE it! I could blend up apples without removing the seeds-which is where all the really healthy live enzymes are. I love my Vita-Mix! And I don't even get paid to say that! (although I wish I did. I tell people all the time how much I love it. I'd be so rich!)
Thanks for the informative post from a fellow triplet momma! You definitely have gotten me thinking although I'm not committing to anything yet.
If I didn't already love you this supermom post might make me hate you.
:-)
Too bad my lil' dude is beyond baby food because I would have given this a try!!
:-)
I am so going to use this if we ever have another one or two.
That is awesome! My friend does the same thing and she LOVES it!
so colourful!!!
As there's no can/jarred baby food here I'll be making my own whether I want to or not!
I haven't seen either of those books before - so I'm bookmarking them for the future.
13 weeks to go - and counting every-single-second!
great post - I actually did this with my third (I guess it takes us awhile) . . . but she WOULD NOT eat baby food - I had too. She was 9 months old and still no food - once I started making her real baby foo d- she ate it right up!
OMG look how organized you are!! I think it's great you make your own baby food--I did it for awhile w/ my first bu slacked off very shortly after that!
um..I think I'm too late ;)
Oh yes, I agree 101%! I did it for all 3 my kids and all 3 are excellent no-nonsense eaters. In fact, The Little Miss is such a great eater (she often prefers her veggies) that one of her pre-school teachers asked me how I did solids with her as she wanted her baby to be such a great eater when she grows up.
And the best thing - allergies! They tend to develop less allergies.
i totally made my own...and sofie was a lover all things home made. in fact, the smell of the fruits and veggies steaming on the stove was enough to sell me! great smells for the house and good food for her belly! all good stuff!
I really, really wish I would have done this with my 2 kids. They are the pickiest eaters ever now! I agree that when they are exposed to the textures and flavos early it helps them stay on board the fruit and veggie train! Fantastic post!
I made my daughter's food too. I really enjoyed doing it.
There's also a PDF cookbook free to download on Cuisnart's website...
Great advice! Thanks for sharing it... My kids are 7 and 4... and I just caught them sneaking valentine's day candy from the valentine's stuff they got from their friends at school. Before breakfast, too. Probably not recommended as a healthy choice for growing kids. :)
You go girl. I wish I had done that for my girls but... I just didn't.
You're such an awesome mom.
What a great idea! And I'll bet that the sodium and sugar content is much lower than the store-bought variety!
I miss making baby food. But not so much that I want to run out and have another baby LOL
Love the pics!
Maybe I'll try that if we have another baby. It does look easy! I like the cost savings too. :)
Great post. I made baby food for my girls. I didn't do it all the time, but I did it a lot. It was nice to have and I really think that giving them none processed food helped me raise non picky eaters.
Love the picture of all the bags laid out. A rainbow of good food.
I am also a homemade baby food making machine...and I totally agree on everything you said...it is amazing the benefits I've seen...and my son is so happy and healthy...and has only gotten sick one time so far....and he eats EVERYTHING...is is the most unpicky child....
I didn't do this when Tristan was younger but I wished I had. You are awesome for doing this. It's easy to see why you do it. Happy V day!
I did this with my other two but havent for this baby. You may have just convinced me to get back to it!
this is a great post! i made my own baby food too and it was so much easier than i thought it would be. and so much better too!
WOW! Those colors are so vibrant and look so delicious! Good for you, Mama!
I did quite a bit more of this with my second and he loved it. Well, until he decided he was NOT going to eat from a spoon and I just had to feed him tiny bits of everything...
Great tips and ideas!
Just like what we did :) But I froze them all in the ice cube trays before putting them into baggies.
we did our own food for our kiddies. for all the same reasons that you listed - cost and ease of transition to table foods were the top 2 reasons!
i think it was the best thing we ever did!!
Although I don't need this now, I know some mommys who do so I will pass this one to them! Thanks for sharing!
I think this is what we are going to do with Grayson. The store bought is just too darn expensive! Plus it will give Aaron something to do!! hehehe!!
Way to go! I am just plain lazy!
i still do this and add it to anything i'm baking since my kids are SO ANTI VEGGIES! LOL :-)
