As a mother, I am in charge of the day to day care of things, puked on, pooped on, whined at, given demands/orders, bearer of nutrients and the comforter. As a nurse, I am in charge of the day to day care of things, puked on, pooped on, whined at, given demands/orders, bearer of nutrients and the comforter. The only big difference is that at work, I have more potent drugs available to me.
Now don't get me wrong. I love being a mother and I love being a nurse. But if I could go back in my life and choose my career all over again. I think that I might want to try something else.
I would want to be a Hair Stylist/Make-up Artist. I think that it would be cool to be on the payroll of J-Lo or Nicole Kidman. I would be a highly respected and sought after stylist in Hollywood. People would live up for days, just to have me cut and style their hair. I would know all the latest hair and make-up secrets. I would be able to women love themselves just by flipping on my flat iron.

OR
I would want to be a high powered executive, of what I am not really sure. But my office would be on the top floor of a New York sky scraper. I would have not one but two assistant that would cater to my every whim. I would enter a room and people would sit up and pay attention. And nothing would be done with out my say so. I would just ooze power and sex appeal. Oh the life of stilettos, pencil skirts and power suits.

OR
I would be a chef. I would not only have a restaurant where reservations were booked 6 months in advance but I would also have a super popular cooking show on the Food Network. You know, I would be Jenny Ray or Jena de Laurentiis. People would adore my food and totally lick their TV's when my show would be on.

So what about you? Would you change career's if given the chance or are you happy with where you are now? Is there something that you would love to do but life took you in another direction?

I have been the high powered executive - it has less to recommend it than you might think.
I have always thought about a school patterned after the Socratic version. Either that or become a professional student.
I want to own my own book store. Nothing grand, just a place that caters to good books and has a good section for kids. A place where moms can come and they don't have to worry about their kids breaking anything, but where the love of words can be shared.
I don't know, Jen, I think I would do this all over again. I love getting to wear scrubs to work (kind of like pj's). I love being the one the new nurses (and resident doctors) go to with questions. And I love cleaning up poop.
Okay, not so much the last one, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
If I had to pick something else, though, I would be a famous well-paid scrapbooker like Becky Higgins or Ali Edwards, with my own magazine and everything.
You can be my hairstylist. We'll be a great team.
OOOOOOOOhhhhhh.........AAAAAAAAHHHHH.....I LOVE what you chose. I'm right there with you!
hmmmm...i guess i would prob be in full time ministry or counseling with high school and college aged students. never would've guessed that either...engineering is so far removed from that.
and if you decide to be a cook or hair stylist, can i get the goodies that come along with you needing to practice...you know, good food and nice hair?
I love what I do! I work for a medical device company, although I'm not a high-powered exec. heh. Working for corporate America does have its appeal.
I would love to have my own coffee shop or resort. Prior to having a salaried jobs, I always did very well in service-oriented jobs, and my fave jobs were working in coffee shops. :)
Loving this post!
I too would love to be a high-powered executive with nebulous duties but minions catering to my every need. I'd skip the heels though...they hurt my feet!
I'm currently trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!
My sister is a professionally trained chef. She actually used to date a Food TV star back in the 80's (before he became famous).
I'm with the other Michelle... still don't want to even THINK about growing up.
Oh, and I wouldn't want you to be like Giada. Her head is a thousand times too big for her tiny body and it looks weird. But I guess if you make one bad-ass plate of mac and cheese, trivial things like an oversized head don't really matter anyway, huh?
It is so true... the mommy and nurse roles are so very much alike. I do think nursing is easier, but would never choose it over mommying ")
Hmmm, photographer... that's it, being a professional photographer would be great!
I love it. I so could see you doing a cooking show with your kids. (Those are some of my favorite blog posts. You know the ones where I lick my computer screen.)
I have no idea what I would choose if there had been different roads. I'm going to have to think on it.
You picked cool careers!
I would love to be a chef. to own a place people are lining up to get into.
I would want to be either a professional nature photographer or a travel magazine writer -- you know the ones that check out and review hotels, resorts, food, etc.
But, Jen, I'm glad you did choose to be a nurse! The world needs more GOOD nurses :)
I'm still in college, so it's not like I would have to go back and change anything, but... I would really (really, really, really) like to be a children's book author. Then I could have storytime at the local library (or maybe Kat's bookstore!) and read my stories to the kids. It'd be great.
I also think that being a child therapist would be especially rewarding.
Maybe I can do both?
I would love to have my own cooking show on the Food Network as well!
My first visit her (I saw your comment on my food blog).
You have triplets! WOW!
I'm amazed!
And inspired.
I would be an owner of a used book store/coffee shop, that sells hippy/witchy stuff, and I would have book signings from all my favorite authors as well as a book club!
I'm with Kat...I would love to own a bookstore:)
I don't think I'd want a job where the celebs would boss me around. :)
I'm not sure I know what I want to be when I grow up! LOL!!
Hummm.....I would still pick mommy...the pay is a little low but it reaps many non-tangible rewards I don't want to miss out on now that I know about them ;-) ....but my dreams for when I grow up more are to own a children's book store, ya know a cute little one in some cute little "old town" looking store with a big window you can peak in and we would carry fun and cool things too like all the Melissa and Doug puzzles/toys. I would love to write a children's book.... a really cute and fun one like the Olivia series....so simple and so incredibly cute! Why couldn't I think of that!?!? I'd like to write in some mother's magazine - if even only once. I think I would like to try teaching (elementary school level) or being an occupational therapist (with pediatrics of course - NO ADULTS!) too for a bit. This is getting long...perhaps I should do a post about this.... :-)
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I keep meaning to do Writer's WOrkshop, but haven't gotten to it yet.
I'm with you, I'd be a chef, but not on TV kind.
I hate that I missed my chance to do workshop this week. It might have hepled me focus! I can't imagine you being anything else but I think you would rock as a sylist. You can come over and do my make-up anytime. :)
I am happy with the path that I am on now. If you asked me 15 years ago, I would have said "Anything but a loan shark". (I worked for a finance company and it sucked big time!)
Librarian! I would like to be a school teacher who all of the kids loved but I don't want to actually teach I just play with the kids!
I love the lick the screen comment b/c there are times when I have wanted to do that!
Love it! Great post Jen!
Since we are moving I am going to be looking for full-time work in DC and this has been on my mind a lot lately. I have such a varied background, banking, legal, politics, and even non-profit/fundraising.
All other things equal a U.S. Senator would be my dream job.
Non-profit work is also great for me because I am passionate about a lot of causes and very social.
Yea! I'm back. I've been gone a long time. And have a lot of catching up to do.
And I just don't want to grow up. Is that an option?
I would be a helicopter pilot or storm chaser. Or both.
Since my career is as a mom, I guess I can't say that I would want to switch. The day may come, though, when I go back to work and I doubt I will go back to the field I was in before (I was a marketing director for an architectural firm). I would like to be a movie critic or a restaurant critic/chef or a photographer or a floral designer or a novelist. We'll see where fate takes me.
I would have been a rock star with a conscience (and fabulous hair). Or at least have my own music store (of the High Fidelity genre).
I think your two jobs are two of the hardest jobs around. Nurse and mom. You deserve two raises each year. ;-)
I attempted the hair thing...made it almost to the end of beauty school. Heads and hair didn't turn out to be as glamorous as I thought. In fact heads are downright gross. =) But, I guess being a nurse, that isn't so bad huh?
You made that prompt look like fun.. I shoulda, coulda, but didn't.
Nice job! (no pun intended)
Oh I love my career and my job, but I would also love to be a photographer, a chef or a horse riding instructor!
The little Miss wants to be a hairdresser!
A full-time photographer. As a kid I wanted to be a professional dancer.
These days? A SAHM.
