A Few Words About Happy Meal Toys

Dear Golden Arches aka McDonald's,

I know that you don't know me very well, ok who am I kidding, you know me very well, maybe a little too well. But you are just so darn convenient and your food, well not very pleasing to my taste, happens to please my children to know end.

They just love your chicken nuggets, french fries and the apples. But with the apples come that caramel. Don't get me started on the caramel. If I would let them, they would try and swim in that little container and sometimes they do and in doing so before this icky sticky mess. But that is not the reason for this letter.

No, I am writing this letter to you to discuss the toy that is offered this month. I mean, really. What in the world were you thinking? I would like to talk to the person that thought that putting a CD in the Happy Meals would be a good idea.

You see those little toys that come in the Happy Meals are Hayden's favorite things in the world. They are his most prized possession. Sure, he usually freezes them but that is how he shows his love.

He looks forward to collecting all the toys and once he has them, he is just so happy. Now, I know that he will loose interest in them in a few day but the beauty of that is that now the babies have a new toy to fight over.

But this month, you had to go and make your toy a CD and not just any CD, a Kidz Bop CD. It is a CD of young people singing covers of pop songs. So not only is this 'toy' not fun to play with it is down right painful to listen too.

And you try and explain to a 4 year old, who has the attention span of a gnat, that there is no toy this month. Then also explain to him why because I am tried of trying and tried of listening to the whining and crying involved with this. It really is a tragedy in his little world and I have witnessed the melt downs to prove it.

So I am sorry that I have been giving the CD's back but you have left me with no choice. They are awful, really they are.

But because your Play Area gives me about an hour or more of peace and helps me run off my kids energy, I am totally going to forgive you. But lets try and make a better choice for next month, preferably, an actual toy. And even better yet, a girl princess toy because those are really Hayden's favorite.

Your, not really wanting to be but I am, loyal customer,
Jen

My daughter really loves the CD but that's only because she can play it on the computer and she loves music. The music isn't very good. I am sorry but hearing the kids sing Kryponite...it's horrible!!It just sounds wrong!

CD? That's awful.

Where are the cheap plastic toys?

McD's toys are bath toys. Well unless they are plush animals..

Love this letter Jen! We do not ofter do McD - but when we do she just loves those toys. She still treasures some year old My little ponies.

My 7 year old loved the cds...however I am soooooo tired of hearing them over and over and over...lol But, I imagine the younger kids wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much as the little older ones. Maybe next month will be better:)

It is most exciting that my girls have finally gotten to the age that they don't want McDonalds anymore. Hallelujah.

But when they were younger, they didn't like Chickfila because of the "toy." Which is almost always a book. Or a cassette tape :-)

Ah, those Happy Meal toys... I have some connections... I'm trying to work something for you ;)

Oh! We haven't been to MacDonald's since my four year old was 10 months old. That's when I started dating Jeremiah and he hates fast food. I have thoughts of french fries all the time. And I used to get a happy meal for myself! Ugh...

What is it about those cheap, plastic toys that kids love so much?!

My 4 year old loves it (thankfully) and my 18 month old just doen't know better yet. I was surprised they did cd's this month.

I have no idea what they were thinking! We end up leaving it on the table with the pile of others that were there when we arrived. It must be for older kids....not the toddler ages. I just try and do the distraction and run game. Otherwise I bring a car from home and bust that out like it's new. Sometimes it actually fools him!!

I've seen info-mmercials with the Kids Bop CD's. . . good call on throwing that one out. It'd be like Chinese Water Torture!!!

I agree my 3 yr old loves the toys! The cd was just wrong!

Does McD's serve anything besides nuggets?? I am completely unaware of any other menu choice. Though I usually skip the apples in lieu of fries. The caramel is a big deterant (I usually hide it so they are totally unaware it exists), and we eat lots of apples at home.

I personally have a different battle with Happy Meal toys... they're EVERYWHERE. In the car, the house, grandma's. You can't escape them. And they usually are enjoyed enough or cute enough to not throw away. But somedays, I just can't help it and chuck the ALL! Just yesterday I threw away a My Little Pony another commenter mentioned. I was tired of picking it up. I don't think it will be missed.

I though the EXACT same thing! I was furious when we got the "toy" only to discover that my toddler cannot play with that and I don't care to listen to it anywhere! Ugh! What were they thinking?

You could ask for the toddler toy, but I'm sure he's going to look at you weird when you hand him a squeaky hunk of soft plastic. :)

When I see that the kids meal toy is just a piece of junk (i.e., CD, puzzle, crappy bits of paper) I don't even open it. It goes right into the trash and I tell Elizabeth there isn't a toy this time. I LOATHE the bits of junk already floating around my house, I'm not adding to it!

You said it!
What under-10 year old really wants a CD instead of a toy???
Well, while we're on it, what kid of any age really wants a BOP CD. And what parent really wants to be playing it in their car...

We remain hopeful for next month!
BTW - I must confess, when it's a really good toy set, I go through drive-thru's while the boys sleep in the car (what else is there to do?) and just ask what toy each ones has until we have a wee little collection ;-). If they don't have a new one, I just drive through and move on until the boys wake up from their nap.
Ok, fine, sometimes I grab an ice-cream.

Amen. I saw that stupid CD and threw it out before I even left the drive threw!

Oh.My.God. Jen, I was so livid when McD's did this! My kids were devastated!! So over the wkend we went to Wendy's instead, thinking they'd get a cool toy in those happy meals...but NO Wendy's is giving away stupid CD's in their happy meals too. What is up with the fast food industry??!!!

You should seriously send that letter to McD's corporate office!! There are some very livid parents of young children out there, me included!

Oh I remember the years of Kidz Bop CD's, ugh!

Thanks for stopping by my blog & helping to make my SITS day special!

Please tell me you don't let your children listen to that ... I'll have to call Family Services on you.

:o)

I appreciate that they have shown me what Kidz Bop is like so I NEVER EVER EVER spent any STUPID money on that stuff.

Michelle said...

LOL! My kids really love the CD, computer games, and books that come with the Chick-fil-a toys. I have mainly given up on happy meals and stick to one pick on the dollar meal.

Oh, thanks for the heads up...I take Graham to McD's once in a while and he would lose his sh*t if he got a CD!! He is completely obsessive about CDs and DVDs.. it's painful...

A McDonald's french fry was the first outside food that my daughter ever hate. That probably doesn't bode well for her future diet.

What's especially funny about this is that I'm having a garage sale this Saturday, and the kidz bop cd from McD's is already in the free box! :)

We spend quite a bit of time at McDonalds too. I hate those darn CDs! I've been asking for the toddler toys.... at least the babies can play with those!!! Love the post, btw!

I def. know what you mean!! We rarely go to mickey d's but she does know she gets a toy and when we got the cd, she was like uhh whats this?
a princess toy would be very nice!!

thank you so much for your vote!

lol, when peanut got her's I thought what the heck....this is the toy? Maybe they wanted to appeal to the older kids?!

Anonymous said...

Luckily for me, my son has no idea about the toy in the bag. He's just concerned with the fries.
But even when he does play with them, they seem to never last too long!

Jill said...

Oh I don't like the CD's either... in fact, they've always managed to find their way into the garbage before we ever got to the car. Oops. Silly mommy!

Gretchen said...

OMG the caramel... the dastardly caramel... I usually have to hide the caramel and tell my kids that the McDonald's people forgot to pack it. If I forget to lie to them, all nutritional benefits are lost once my kids begin licking the inside of the caramel bowl package.

Could it be called a "bowlette"? Like a very small bowl?

Anyway, IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE CD'S SEND THEM TO ME!!!! My kids love them and I am planning a long car trip to St. Louis in June. The kids need some CD's!! :-)

LOL! Well said :) I have quite the collection of those annoying CD's . :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier!

I'd been wondering how kids and parents were reacting to the CDs-I'm not surprised at all. They seem pretty sucky.

Ugh. We just got a cd last week and it is b.a.d.

I suppose pop song covers are better than some kids songs. Thanks for admitting you actually take your kids to McDonalds. We all need to see that other moms aren't perfect. Not to say you're a bad mother at all, just honest about what it takes to survive triplets.

Carrie Darney said...

OK, so I heard this morning on the radio that they are pulling the CD's because it sounds like a bad word is being said in it...not just any bad word either...the F word! Says somthing that sounds like "f875ing"!!!

Jennifer said...

I'd rather hear people scratching a chalkboard all day than listen to those cds! I was so disappointed to see those in the Happy Meals--I promptly exchanged Pickle's for a toddler toy. Gooser wanted to keep his though...unfortunately!

That is one funny letter! Love it!

BTW, I found your blog on someone else's.

Thanks for the humorous story!

I'm just back from vacation and getting caught up on your blog and this was the post I just had to comment on!!! My son -- also a devout lover of Happy Meal Toys (he won't eat anywhere else because "McDonalds has the best!") was bitterly disappointed with the Kidz Bop CDs (as was I). He just couldn't understand it. It was like a trusted friend had betrayed them ... and this promotion is going on and on and on and on. The agony. In kid time, he will forsake McDonalds before this promotion ends! And I agree with you 100% -- it is torture of the parents. What is the point of having kids sing songs????? seriously, it just makes already bad songs even worse. ick.
