This weekend, I found myself doing somethings that I have not done in a long, long time.
I shaved my legs,
Plucked my eyebrows,
Flat ironed my hair,
Wore the push-up bra,
Put perfume in all the right places,
and Dusted off my high heels.
But I did not go out with Jeff. No, I left him at home to deal with the screaming children and the bath tub full of poop.
I went out with the girls, Girls Night Out! I met some friends for a some good food and wine, lots and lots of wine.
But as my friends and I sat at the table, talking and laughing, I couldn't help but notice the people around us. There were two very distinct people at the restaurant with us.
There were the young, beautiful people. All tan and thin, dressed in the latest and greatest in trendy fashion.
There were the mature and retired people. All tan and fit, dressed in the latest in retired wear.
There were just these two groups of people coming and going all night long. It made me wonder, where are all the people my age?
Where? I'll tell you where all the people are. At home taking care of the kids.

Oh I hear ya!!
Glad you had a lovely night out!!!
Heels.... what are they again :P
very true- a whole generation goes missing- showing up on rare events like girls nights out.....
I've set up my blogroll to tell the name of the Blog, the title of the post, and how recently it was written. So my blogroll answered the question for you. It said:
Buried With Children
When Did I Become Part of that Middle Age Group?
So Jen, just a little over half an hour ago, apparently. That's not too bad.
You said it sista!!!!
I'm with you...Girl's Night Out rocks!!! Glad you had a great time.
Girls night out is the best. Hope you had a wonderful time.
Most of the time, I'm totally okay with being home and taking care of the kid, but it's nice to have a break once in awhile.
I can't even remember my last girls night out...or the last time I plucked my eyebrows. I better get on that.
Oh yes, off course! Bookclub night for me tonight. Yeah!
Jeremiah is pretty much my only friend at this point, or the only person that will put up with me talking incessantly about my kids...so my nights out are Jeremiah/Erin nights out...and you saw how those end! ;)
I mean, seriously...I hear you.
I went out with one of my bffs on Friday. We got all snazzed up and did our hairs and painted our faces. Went to a chic restaurant where we had a bottle of really great wine and loads of different appetizers, and chocolate fondue for dessert. Delicious.
And then I spent all of Saturday on the potty...and watching season 1 of Gossip Girl, feeling very old.
Good times.
We are so middle aged. Sigh...
I hope you had a wonderful night out. I bet you looked fabulous all spiffed up. It's good for the ego to bring out the inner hottie every once in awhile.
It's ironic that I'm pondering mid-life on my blog today, too!
Age is a state of mind--going out and having fun is how to stay young...and sane! ;)
that's where i was! unshaven, unplucked, crazy hair, no bra, just my natural scent and shoeless :) hope you had fun!
Going out is always fun. It helps clear my mind.
I know when I went on my mini vacation that I actually found myself shaving and *gasp* putting on some makeup. Usually at home I don't even bother. Much to the chagrin of my husband.
You are so right! I'm 33 without small babies (mine are teens) so we end up hanging out with people much older than us, or much younger than us because everyone else has kids to take care of.
We've only found one couple that we fit with really well in terms of kids, ages and hobbies. And then they went and moved away. :(
so so true!!!!!! hah!!
It's true! lol! I haven't had heels on in 10 years! lol!
girls night out! Yeah for you. THe middle age group is taking care of their children and trying to spend a few minutes with their husbands with conversation that word with more than one or two syllables.
To quote my husband "Hangovers aren't as much fun when you have kids"
I had a BLAST!!!!
I hear ya! I'm too old to wear trendy junior stuff anymore but I am not yet ready to embrace the BeJeweled denim jacket or the matching golf shirt and bermuda shorts. My heart says 25 but my body and my face says 45. BTW I'm 37!
I am so in touch with that emotion! It's like we take a 20-year hiatus from the world to raise the kids.
ISN'T THAT SOMETHING? - AND BEFORE WE KNOW IT WE WILL BE THE MATURE GRANDPARENT GROUP. i AM THANKFUL FOR THE MIDDLE AGE NOW.
yep so true
Mature and retired. All tan and fit?
I have been retired for almost a year. I put on 15 pounds. Fit? oh, come on now. Mature?? I always wondered about that one. BTW, I wonder where everyone has gone. And, I'm the only one of any of my friends who still has a kid.
Yeah for girls night!
Yep--we notice the same thing when we go out, too.
I have noticed this exact same thing. And then I wonder, "did I shave my legs for this?" :)
yes, that is where we are. althought, sometimes the best parties are at home!
Wow...what an observation! I'd have to say I haven't noticed that...but then again - I'm one of those ones stuck at home! haha!! Between work and the kids...don't get out much!
Glad you had an evening out!
Yayy for a girls' night out and getting dolled up! :)
But yeah, it sure is amazing how we don't even notice that we're not the young crowd anymore until it's past us. hmmmm.
Yep, you hit the nail on the head with that one.
I don't even know what's in style anymore. Nor am I willing to pay what they want for "stylish" clothes.
Then I end up feeling like a frumpy middle aged cranky-ass woman.
Maybe I should suck it up and buy the darn clothes. 'Cause I don't wanna be middle aged and cranky! I wanna be tan and fit and stylin'. Hookin' up with Robert Pattinson and such.
Okay, maybe not, but I know you know what I'm talking about. Clearly, since you just wrote a frickin' post about it...
How true!!
Glad you got the chance to get out!! Plucked and shaved:)
Oh I'm so jealous that you got out... and that your hubby stayed in and watched the kids - and the floating poop.
I shaved on Sunday too... though I can guarantee that my shaving of the nether regions took FAR more time than yours... partly because I can't see down there anymore. :) Ooops, was that TMI?
yep, taking care of the kids. Every girl needs a ladies night! Forget the young people, if only they knew what was ahead of them. Plus, when you where younger didn't you and the gals admire the middle aged women who were out? we sure did, we thought they were so sophisticated...lol if I only knew then what lied ahead :) Hope you had a blast!
so so true! Whenever I go out I notice the same thing. It's crazy! I'm either too old or too young for the crowds. LOL
Glad you had a great time and some good wine :)
You were looking at where we were and where we are going to be. :)
I love GNO!!! I crave it every month so I know what a great time you had! And didn't you hear? Middle Age is the new Twenty so feel alive and noticed!! ;p
Yeah, but at least you were out with he girls having fun. The 60 year olds are looking at us wishing they were our age. Grass is always greener, right?!
Yep--they were all at home w/ the poop!
Glad you got tp get out w/ the girls--I need to do that soon!
I tell ya....those realizations are the things mid-life-crisis' are made of.
Soooo true... I felt like my 30's just passed me by... where did 10 years go? -taking care of kids... but my goodness it goes sooo fast..
by the way YOU are not middle aged... holy crap... I have 10 years on you... what does that make me...EEEEk
I so feel like an old hag when I see the super hot 20something crowd...
