Raise Your Hand When You Are Finished

In our part of the world, the first weekend in June means that it is festival time. Festival of the Arts is when part of the downtown area is closed, stages are set up and food booths from all over the world are open for business.

Local artists get a chance to preform for a crowd of thousands and local people get to experience these artist and eat some yummy, yummy food.

It is really a cool thing. I have been going, not every year, since I was a young girl and now I love the fact that I can take my kids. It really is an awesome experience. People from all different back grounds and cultures come together for one reason, to enjoy and support the arts.

Art is right up Hayden's ally. They have a 'Parent Free' zone where kids can paint and make other projects. Hayden took to this like white on rice. Here is my little artist doing what he does best.

This last picture may seem a little weird. What in the whole is he doing? Yes he is holding the balloon on top of his head but he is also doing something much, much bigger. Following directions that proved to me, he is ready for kindergarten.

This fall, Hayden will be going to kindergarten. This is really want I wanted. Despite that fact that he will be young, I feel that he is ready for kindergarten. But with any decision that you make as a mommy there is always that second guessing.

Is sending him to Kindergarten really the right thing? He is really ready? He is so young, maybe young 5's would be right for him?

But there at Festival, all my doubts and second guesses were silenced. You see when Hayden entered the 'Parent Free' painting zone, he was told by the 'teacher' where to paint and when he is finished to raise his hand and wait for help.

And that my friends, is just what he did. He can listened and followed directions. Now, I know that kindergarten is not just about listening and following directions but it is a huge part. And Hayden, he can do it. He can really do it.

He is ready and I could not be more proud.

I know the feeling. When you see your baby functioning in the world...it makes me feel like I did a good job! You certainly did with Hayden:-)

that is awesome, my oldest turns 5 Sept 18 so she has to wait one more year. I really feel she is so ready now but then I wouldn't want her to be the younges which she would be. But it still concerns me, i think she is going to be really bored next year when she starts.

That's great news...I think it sounds like he is definitely ready and I'm glad you were able to affirm that! Looks like a fun weekend!

I love festivals like that... can't wait to take the kids to something like that this summer...

And yes, it does seem like he's ready for the big K. It's ok Mommy, you'll be fine....

What an awesome looking festival!!! I wish we had something like that in our neck of the woods.
Great job Hayden!!! I can relate to your mommy anxiety...I'm sending Jack to kindergarten in the fall, but with a summer birthday he will be the youngest. In fact, as we explored school this past year, I found many private schools don't even accept children with birthdays after May 31! It is a tough decision to make...I'm glad I won't have to with my other two and they have January and September birthdays.

My oldest was young when he went to Kindergarten and at first he struggled but by the end of 1st quarter, he was doing great!

Awesome! Listening and following directions is such a huge part of the maturing process. I know you always wonder how your kids are when they are with someone else. Whenever I take my 5 year-old niece out I make sure to tell her mom how good she was. And she always is!
Funny, in reading the comments, how birthday cutoffs vary so widely in different areas. My sister lives in San Diego County and the cutoff there is early December.

Love the artwork! I put my son in at 4 and he turned 5 at the end of November and he did just fine! I think when you feel they're ready then go for it!!

Look at him go!
I love his painting, and it is great that he is such a good listener!

Being a good listener and following directions will make kindergarten so much easier for him! He's a great little artist!!

Such a big transition... they grow sooo much in kindergarten. He's going to LOVE it.

We are going thru the very same thing with Phu ... only I don't think he is ready. He just does not do well in large groups and does not display any independance. JayT was the same way. Hayden, however, will do just fine and be voted class president :o)

you are so right! it isn't all they do in Kindergarten, but once they can follow the directions and listen to the teacjer.....everything else falls into place. Oh I am so happy for you - It is such a relief isn't it?

Oh, you are right to be so proud of your little man. It's relieving and satisfying to know that he is ready - it means that you did a great job. I am sure he will enjoy himself very much next year. Great artwork too!

My kids are so NOT artsy. Their paintings are just a big mess to see how dark they can make the color combinations. Then they want me to hang them on the walls. How can I say no without hurting their feeling!?

I thought that was a picture of me! Dang!

He's a regular Van Gogh. Well, don't let him cut his ear off or anything...

It is odd to see your child functioning without you, after all the years where they needed you, isn't it? Cute picture!

He is a great artist!

And I am sure he will love school. Sometimes we think they are better home with us, but they prove to us that they are more independent than we think.

Rowdy would cry when I would leave him anywhere. But as soon as he started school he was a different kid. He LOVES it and is sad when it isnt a school day.

((hugs))

Great set of pictures! He'll have so much fun in kindergarten!

You have a budding artist on your hands. And we can all say "and we knew him when".
Good job, Hayden.
Oh, and the are always ready for school before mama is ready for them to go to school.

Great job Hayden!

I just can't believe he's old enough for Kindergarten. We are having that same debate right now -- Maggie's birthday is 14 days past the cut off. Here they really encourage you to wait, so Maggie's kindergarten class will probably be filled with 6 year olds. We still have a year to figure it out.

Good luck to Hayden!

That boy's got talent! He'll do great in kindergarten!

It is sooo bittersweet. It's great to see them move on to bigger things. And there is nothing like that transition to kindergarten. He's going to be just fine. Just wait till you get all those babies on the bus!

Awwww, this is such a sweet post! Cole and Bella are off to kindergarten in the fall and I can't help but keep wondering if they're truly ready, even though their pre-K teacher promised me they were more than ready (or was she just saying that b/c she doesn't want them in her class again next year....see, always second guessing everything)

My kids listen fabulously when other adults give them instructions but when it's me?? In one ear, out the other!

I loved this post...he's such a sweet boy!

Michelle said...

Don't second guess yourself.......mom's know! Plus, hands coming out of your shoulder is a sign that a kid is ready for K. Really.......it's true! :)

Oh Jen, they grow up so fast! Congrats!

Aw, my oldest starts kindergarten this fall, too. But I am not quite as sure that he is ready. i guess only time (or an art fest) will tell.
