Mission Manners.

As parents, we want our children to be polite and remember their manners. Getting your child to say please and thank you can be an up hill battle at times. But there is nothing more gratifying than hearing your child say, "Tank Oo, Mommy" and knowing that your lessons have stuck.

Now it is my experience that teaching the 'please and thank yous' is the easy part. It is the response to bodily functions that proves to be more difficult.

Bodily functions happen. It is a part of life and sure its funny when someone lets a big juicy fart fly or a burp bubbles out so loud that it shakes the table. I have laughed at this and I have even been the one, letting the fart rip. Sometimes, you just can't help it.

But I think that even though this is funny, you still have to say excuse me. It is just polite. And I have made it my mission to teach this to my children and even teach this to my husband.

I say let the burps come but say 'Excuse me' when they do.
I say let the farts out but say 'Excuse me' after it has been released.

This is all a process of the body and it would not be a pretty sight if we tried to keep all our gaseous functions inside. I am pretty sure our eye balls would pop out.

Now for the most part, my mission has been successful. Hayden is a pro. He passes gas, he laughs but he quickly says excuse me. The little boys, Jake and Quinn, they are learning. They don't know when they fart but if I hear it, I will ask "What do you say?" and they will give me an enthusiastic "Shoosh me."

But Claire, well see is another story. She thinks its funny and will just laugh and laugh when she burps or farts. So I guess I should not have been surprised when this happened.

She was playing with Quinn, stood up and lets burp out that seemed way to big to be coming from such a tiny person.

"Claire!" I exclaimed. "What do you say?"

"BURP!" she yelled as she looked me straight in the eyes. Giggles burst forth from her little body as she ran away down the hall.

Getting her to say 'Excuse me' is my chosen mission. She will get there......

I hope.

HAHAHA...

we have implemented this in our house as well with our 2 year old...It works too well. If he even thinks he hears a "toot" he will let someone know they should say excuse me!

LOL, I always laugh at my sil, she is always trying to teach my niece how to be lady like...sit like a lady, say excuse me, thank you, etc. It's just funny because sil is obnoxious and loud lol!

Good Luck with teaching little Claire!

Get them well trained before they are all in school and learn terrible habits from their friends.......

My kids now use the "but ____ doesnt say excuse me so why should I????" excuse.

Shall I mention all of the bad words they have learned in the last week alone?????

I'm still trying to teach my 9 year old that bodily functions don't require you to dissolve into a fit of giggles.

My mom used to tell us that you don't have to burp or fart so if you do, then you are rude. I kept thinking to myself "I will blow up if I don't fart!"

My kids think burps are hillarious. I never thought that a one year old could be taught to make himself burp but he can. I don make them say excuse me after the giggles are done.

what is it that drives our little girls to be so un-girly at times!?

Yep, good luck with that!

Haha! How funny that it is your little girl who isn't using manners! :) How can you resist the cuteness though?

When Tristan burps I have to say "what do you say?" and he'll go "moo me" (excuse me) but he is learning he can make himself burp and he won't say excuse me after those. gross. If I hear him fart, he'll say it, too. And he's pretty good with please and thank you.

Don't worry, some day Claire will be the polite girl with manners and the boys will have forgotten theirs. :)

Well, your kids are once step ahead of mine. When I ask Cole, after he burps, "what do you say?", he'll say "I burped". Yeah, as if I didn't know that??

Of course it doesn't help matters that Tim will burp and fart and then he tries to get the kids to join in with him.

She will get there :)

My girls are still so amused. I try to get them to mind their manners. But I think they might be teenage boys in disguise.

Haha.

My daughter will announce when she's farted. She'll be all, "I farted! Ewwww!"

Farts are funny. It's tough to teach my daughter to be polite about it when I'm laughing, too.

Spoken like a mom who is a nurse. Burps and farts happen! It always puts a smile on my face when people tell me how polite my kids are and use please and ty's. Because somedays I don't hear it at home but at least they are using it out in the world!

See the one I'd have trouble with would be my husband!

We do request and excuse me too....but burps and farts always make me laugh. I'm immature like that.

There is something about little girls & giggles... I am often reminding Ella to say pardon!

As for Connor, he tries to make his burps as loud as possible!! And he always does them in the most inappropriate places!! Like at a restaurant or a church luncheon :/

And looks like your little lady will be the family clown! Or perhaps she just has the best sense of humour. :)

Oh we have the same rules in the house, but off course no where near with The Boys. What gets to me is how easily they learn "Thank You" and how hard it is to get that "Please" going.

we started charging $5 for farts at the dinner table...you can make some serious vacation money!!!

Passing gas is "passable" with "excuse me" when those cuties pies are little. However, it is a reasons to evict from cars or rooms when these boys get older. It becomes a downright environmental hazard then. BTW, we had a kitten that was almost re-named Gasy-Cat until her diet was regulated! Great humor resulted there!

LOL!
Abigail says, "Tank 'ou, ma'am"

For burps she covers her mouth, looks suprised and says, "OH! I burped!"

Funny stuff. For a while, my sweet, darling little twin girls would announce, "I made a fluffy! Come smell!"

hee hee - my little one is like that - she gets the biggest kicks out of toots! and then keeps trying to do it again!
