Quick, Lets Go to the Store

I am fortunate that I don't often have to take my children shopping with me. Store are just not equipped to accommodate multiple young children, expect Costco but that is a different story. Usually by the time I get them all in the chart there is not enough remove left for anything else.

They all dislike riding in the cart and do their best to not. The protests are great and I just hold my breath that someone will not fall out.

But there is the rare occasion that I have to take them with me. There is just no getting around it. And for some reason when I have to take them with me, I am always in a hurry, I don't have list to remind me what I needed to get and I always end up forgetting the item that we came to the store for in the first place.

I think that there is a reason for this. Maybe it lies my constant dialog while we are in the store.

"Hayden, don't touch that."

"Quinn stop hitting Jake."

"Jake don't pull Claire's hair."

"Hayden, where are you!"

"Hayden, walk with me please."

"Sorry, excuse us."

"Quinn sit down."

"No Jacob, you must stay in the cart."

"Hayden, don't touch that."

"Quinn stop pulling at that."

"No, no Claire. You can't throw Mommy's keys on the floor."

"Hayden, pay attention! Watch where you are going."

"Sorry, excuse us."

"Quinn sit down."

"Jacob sit down."

"Quinn stop hitting Claire."

"No Claire you can't have a hat."

"No. No. No new toys."

"You have to go the bathroom? Really? Didn't you go before we left?"

"Hayden come here."

"Sorry, excuse us."

"Hayden don't run."

"Hayden don't touch that!"

"Jacob and Quinn! Sit Down!!!!!"

"Hayden, get up off the floor."

"Quinn, don't hit."

"Sorry, excuse him."

"Hayden, don't touch that."

"That's it we are done! We are going home!"

(sigh)

On this trip, we were suppose to get diapers. You do think that diapers came home or even made it into the cart?

Nope.

I find it challenging to keep track of one child in the store let alone 4!!!

If I had a nickel for everytime I have to beg, "Sorry, excuse us" when we're in a store.

Dude...I'd be rich. Then we could dump all those nickels in the slots in Vegas.

Woooooooo!

Oh, I remember those days.

Now, it's so much easier.

Hang in there. It will get better. Or you'll figure out to never take the kids with you, and use grocery shopping as your "girls night out".

Whichever.

You are a brave brave woman. I dread going to the store if it's just me and Maggie (of course, I'm one of those weird women who hates shopping).

Wow, sounds like an adventure! It would be trick with one toddler, with three... well. I'm impressed!

Oh I can feel your pain! And you have one more than I do!

No. You forgot the diapers?

I can see why......but I think I'd sit down and cry after a grocery run and then not have the diapers I needed.

Our grocery story trips sounds similar......on a smaller scale. :) I always get the "you have your hands full, don't you?" at the grocery store. Every. single. time.

I agree with Wendy, you are very brave! I only have one kid and I try not to take her with me.

Sounds hectic! I only have a soon-to-be-9-year-old and 13 month old, but I rarely take them grocery shopping any more. I pay the extra $10 and have groceries delivered. It may not save money, but it saves sanity!

And I thought it was bad with just the one kid. I've been sitting her debating if I should slip out of work for a bit to grab the items I need so I don't have to take him to the store with me. For the most part he's very good, but there are those days he's all over the place and I can't get him to stay in the cart and he wants to rearrange all the coffee cans and . . . well, you know, three times over!

Luckily my two are easy enough to take with me but I can somewhat imagine your pain :D

And I don't always remember my stuff either..

When I was a single mom to one I took B everywhere with me and it was no big deal. Even now that my kids are older I hate taking them all with me. I have taken one the last two shopping trips and they were relatively helpful. I always go in with all three thinking we will just zip in and zip out but it never happens that way.

I understand. My husband and I found a way to take the kids in public no matter the situation. I can take them to the store, park, church by myself and I do not have a problem. It is called the "safari" leash. Here is the blog post for it.

I promise with some practice you can go anywhere.

We just got home from the store and then I read this. Don't hate me, but I have a pretty peaceful time with my boys at the store...most of the time. There are only two of them though. If I have more, I'm totally positive I won't be able to handle it! :)

LOL...I usually do my grocery shopping late at night after the kids are all in bed. I took 1 with me this past weekend and it wasn't too bad, but certainly added time and such on our trip.

Momma@Live. Laugh. Pull your hair out said...

I feel your pain hun. I avoid shopping with all three kids. It gives me anxiety attacks!

I totally relate to that scenario, and I always go to the store with all 4 in tow. Fortunatly mine are not triplets, yet, while 5 and under, they are staggered enough to facilitate cart usage. And Wally World has those kind that have 5-point harnesses, which are more difficult to climb out of. THing is, my kids fight over who GETS to sit.

Um, I do want to know, if you realized every time you said cart, it is actually misspelled as chart? It got to be amusing by the end. Sorry. I'm a weird grammar freak. Pardon my irritating quirks.

Schmoochiepoo said...

I think I was in line behind you.
LOL!

That's why I duct-tape mine in the cart. So much more peaceful. :)

Oh my...I certainly hope you don't have to do that too often! That sounds like way too much work. You poor thing!

pick me. pick me! NO!!!

i feel your pain...i just had that trip today with the girls...and one of my worst is the 14 yo! she's the instigator to all that is ornery!

Oy goodness. I'm hoping diapers made it, but I fear its just wishful thinking.

Liz Mays said...

I would probably only be willing to take that on about once a month!

Grand Pooba said...

Oh dear, well at least you have an excuse for forgetting what you went to the store for!

I have an award for you at my blog. (I apologize in advance!) It is more like those chain letters from the 80's, but I DO really love your blog!

CaraBee said...

I can't take my daughter to the store with me anymore. It sucks that I have to wait until my husband gets home, but the stress of it is just too much.

Teri said...

This is the same conversation I have when I take my two teens...isn't it supposed to get better???

CynthiaK said...

LOL! That would exactly describe my trip to the store as well! So funny!!

Lani said...

Right there with ya! I almost run people over trying to get through the store before the meltdowns begin!

Emily said...

There have been several times when I've left a full shopping cart. Why can't they just sit there quietly eating their box of animal crackers?

jori-o said...

Blech. I ran into the store today with my three (two of whom SHOULD be old enough to behave properly!), and by the time we left 10 minutes later, I was ready to leave them in the parking lot and run.

I will do almost ANYTHING to not take multiple kids with me to the store!

AiringMyLaundry said...

Yup, I go through the same thing and I only have two kids. But those two kids are quite spirited and don't seem to like to sit.

I feel your pain.

i don't know how you do it girl...i have a hard enough time wrangling my 3! thank goodness for 24 hour grocery stores...i never thought getting milk at midnight could be so relaxing!

During school, I usually take my younger 3 on my trips to the store and I have my 5-yr-old who wants to push the cart she can't see over, my 2-yr-old playing hide and seek with me and me not knowing it... and my 1-yr-old screaming to get out of the cart!

Before I go, I think - I can do this! After about 2 minutes, I wonder why do I do this to myself all the time!

Jill said...

Oh yes, I can certainly feel your pain!!

I can't multi task anymore... when I do, I do things like leave my ATM card in the ATM machine. Forget to get gas when returning the rental car - only to have an add'l $40 fee...

Helene said...

Oh, this sounds SO familiar!!! I think people actually run the opposite way now when they see and my kids barreling down an aisle at the store.

girlytwins said...

Wow! And I thought shopping with my twins was bad. I guess I should count my blessings :)

Oh, I remember those days. But I only had two! It's not just shopping, it's an expedition!
