What Stopped the Blogging?

I have been a little distracted and not in the blogging world as much as I would like. Maybe no one noticed, well some people noticed because I have lost followers (not many but I have to wonder if this isn't why).

Anyway, there are many reasons for my absence or at the very least less time at the computer.

There is the reason that it is summer and the weather has been awesome so I have been outside with the kids but that really isn't the reason because my lap top is capable of going outside with me.

There is the famous 'I am busy reason', which I am busy but that has never kept me from the blogging world before.

There is the 'we just moved the 'babies' into toddler beds and they are up at all hours of the night so I am tired and I can't form a complete thought' excuse. While this is true and I am tired, my tiredness hasn't really kept me from blogging in the past.

No, there is one thing that can keep me from the blogging world and that thing is this

Yes, I have found a book, an awesome book that I just can't put down. A book that I have fallen head over heals in love with.

Now reading books and I have this weird relationship. You see, I have not read a book since I read Breaking Dawn and that was about six months ago.

I really do enjoy reading books but I am very picky about what I read and I get burned out very quickly. And since I read all four Twilight books in rapid succession and in a short amount of time, I got burned out.

I wish that I could read books like her (the list of books that she has read is so impressive) but I can't. I have to read every printed word or I will totally miss the story. This makes me a very slow reader, sometimes painfully slow.

When I start to read a book, it has to grab me in the first few pages or I am done. I have tried to get over this but when I am not wrapped up in the story by the the second or third chapter, I just can't read it anymore.

Reading the book then becomes work and that is not why I want to read. I can't tell you how many books sit on my bookshelves that I have only read part of with no plans to go back and read them again.

Knowing this about myself, I should really go to the library for my books but I just can't stand library books. Now don't get me wrong, I love the library and when Jake, Quinn and Claire grow out of their 'book destruction' phase I will take them there. But I will not get any books for me.

For me, it has to be new books. There is just something about holding a virgin book in your hands and opening it for the first time; that smell, the crisp pages, the shininess of the cover, that I can't do without.

This new book thing is so important to me that when I purchase a book, it is always from the bottom of the pile or the very last one on the shelf. Crazy, I know.

Ok, so know you know the quirkiness about me and reading books, back to the book at hand.

'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is an amazing book. I don't really know why I bought the book expect for the fact that when I was standing in Costco looking at all the books, my eye kept going back to it. I picked it up and put it back three times until a woman that I never met came up to me and couldn't stop gushing about how awesome this the book was.

If this book could cause a total stranger to talk to me and me to talk back to her then I had to give it a try.

I bought the book home and I still wasn't sure that I was actually going to like it. But then I opened it and started reading and I was hooked. The story just pulled me in. It has every a good story should, mystery, romance, murder, history, suspense, complicated relationship, relatable and the list goes on and on.

And it takes every effort of self control not to read it every waking second. You should know its good because it has pulled me away from my beloved blogging and that right there speaks volumes as to how awesome this book is.

So now let me tell you a little bit about this book and then I will stop gushing and let you move onto reading other blogs.

This book takes place in Afghanistan. Its is about a story of two women and what its like to be a woman in Afghanistan. This book takes you through a little bit of the country's history and all the hardships that the people faced.

But most of all this book is about the Afghani women and what its like to be a woman in this culture; the struggles and hardships, the perseverance and their sisterhood. There strength is amazing an awe inspiring.

This book opened my eyes to a new culture and best of all made me think about things in my own life and even challenge some of my beliefs (I love it when a book does that).

So if you are looking for a good book to read during these last few weeks of summer, pick this one. But not for the story, and not for the excuse not to do anything else but because it is an amazing story that will make you think.

Glad you're enjoying it too!

I read that book a while ago and thought it was amazing! In a time when we hear about the middle East and Islam is permeating our lives on a daily basis, I thought this book made me question some values and ideas that popular society pushes me to accept.
I recently finished this book: http://www.amazon.com/My-Life-Traitor-Iranian-Memoir/dp/0374217300
which was also very good and along the same lines a ATSS.

I finished that book a couple of weeks ago and I loved it!
Have you read his other book called 'The Kite Runner'?
It's fantastic!

Yep, this was a good one! I read it a couple of months ago. Glad you are enjoying it....nothing like a great book that grabs you!

Sounds interesting! I just finished a book that I got back in May from a friend and had been wanting to read. I go in spurts in my reading too - will read like crazy for a month or two...then can't get into a good book for another stretch...have a huge stack of books to catch up on in my room...better get cracking before summer is over! :-)

Looks like I might have to add this one to that pile :-) GLad you enjoyed it so much!

I've been reading like crazy all summer too. I love reading though so it's a treat to me to have any time to. And I've been getting my books from the library since I fly through them. I was spending entirely too much money on the new books only to have them on the shelf in a day or two.

I'll put this one on my reserve list!

Awww...a little linky love for me! I don't know that I would call my reading list amazing. It is rather eclectic. With classics. Book club books. And a heavy dose of smut.

But I do love to read. And this book was really good. His other was fantastic as well.

I have read some incredible books this summer - ones that really grab you - you need to read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.

And if you haven't read it already - "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel.

Both just fantastic.

And if you want a quick read that is rather funny - read "The Sex lives of Cannibals" by Maarten Troost. If you are looking for it in the book store - it's in the travel section...

Wow. That was one heck of a stellar review. I'm torn between curiosity to read it and fear of getting sucked in...

I've lost a couple followers, too, lately. Strangely painful...

Sounds good. I wish I had more time to read. I really enjoy it. Right now I don't even have the time to read blogs but I stole some today and I am so glad I did. Thanks for stopping by - I love when you get to visit.

I blogged this book! And it's every bit as good as you say! Love love love it...have you read Kite Runner?? I'm not sure which I like better...but I think Kite Runner earned a higher rating from me.

I can't wait to hear how you like this one at the end!!

I'm an addictive reader type person so I have to really put strict controls on myself to avoid over-reading. I restrict myself during most of the year to People Magazine :)

Nothing stops life quite like a good book! I will have to add this to my list of must reads. I think your blog is great. I can really connect with it. I recently started blogging myself.

I loved that book. It made me cry--horrible racking sobs! Seriously. It was THAT good.

Damn. I need to find a really good book. :)

The title of your blog tells me why you don't read as much as "her". I'm sure when your kids are 11 and 8, like hers are, you too will have a long list of books that OTHER busy moms will envy!

We're all on the same merry-go-round here, some are just in the outside row and can see the rest of the park going by! (that's MY metaphor of the week)

That's on my TBR list too. I read his first novel and loved that one so I'm sure I will love this one as well!

Enjoy your summer. It's fast approaching its end.

I read the Kite Runner, but I haven't tackled this one yet.

I think I might be motivated to give it a try soon.

That does sound great!!

I read the Kite Runner a while back and have had this one recommended to me several times. For some reason I just can't bring myself to read it. If it's anything like the Kite Runner, it's hardly a light summer read, which is pretty much all I've been in the mood for lately. Maybe when the weather changes, I'll be up for some deep stuff.

I so love reading!

I want to read The Time Travelers Wife next. But all the stores are sold out. Hmph.

You're right, you can never use the kids as a busy excuse. Especially when you have the electronic babysitter. The book excuse is totally more believable.

I love a good book so I'll have to remember this one the next time I'm looking for something to read.

Thank you for the book review. I too have eyed the book in interest but have never checked it out from the library. It is going on my list.

When you get ready to read another book consider my recommendation for The Book Thief. It is about the Haulocaust. I have trouble describing it because it affected me in countless ways.

Also, thank you for stopping by my blog! I am glad you enjoyed it.

You found my blog and I came to see what yours was all about. Boy was I excited to see you mention that book. I love a good book too, but I too must be "grabbed" from the start or I quickly stop reading it. I JUST borrowed this book from a friend and I am only on chapter 5 but I am already sucked in. I'm loving it and can't wait to finish it now!

I have been losing people too, Jen. Why all the hate in the blogosphere? Seriously, people. Stop sucking.

In other news, I was thrilled to read your stellar review, Jen. Definitely adding this book to my "must read" list now.

I hadn't noticed a break in blogging!

Sounds like a great book. I have a pile of 10 library books to get through, but now that Baby Joseph is here, I think they'll all be going back unread.

Have you read the Kite Runner? Even if you've seen the movie READ THE BOOK. It's 1,000x better (although I really enjoyed the movie).

And, I can't imagine all 3 kids being up at all hours of the night. That's why Moose is still in his crib. :D lol

Thanks for stopping by my blog from SITS earlier! This book is on my searching for list :) I just know I'll find it at a yard sale or the thrifty store any day now! Have a great evening!

Sounds good! I love a good book, but since the girls came along I just don't have 3 hour stretches to get into a book like I used too. Looks like a good one though! And I love books that have a cultural element.

No worries about the infrequent blogging. I'm pretty sure everyone spends less time in front of their computer in the summer, at least I HOPE they do!
