Whatever It Takes To Be The 'Cool Mom'

Ever before I was a mom, I knew that when I became a mom, I wanted to be one of the 'cool moms'.

You know the ones. The mom that all the kids adore and flock to. She is just so totally cool and knows all the trends and listens to the latest music.

The 'cool mom' is fun to hang out with, fun to talk to and she also has the best house. You know the house, where all the kids come to chill and jam out.

I so want to have this kind of house. This is one of the reasons, I agreed to build our house where we did.

Living in the woods is cool. There is all kinds of fun things to do like make tree forts, have bonfires, sleep in a tent in the woods and plenty of creepy, crawly animals to catch.

Oh and the cool mom, always has the best food. The cool mom's house has all the food that the other moms don't let you eat. She is able to whip up some mean nachos and a banana split in a moments notice.

This is my dream.

I have some time yet to work on this dream because right now my kids think that I am totally cool when I blow bubbles or draw a space ship. But it is never to early to start working on the next phase of the dream.

So in an effort to work towards my dream of becoming the 'cool mom', I have been watching the Disney channel.
I feel that even though my kids are not old enough to know who Hannah Montana or The Jonas Brothers are, it is only a matter of time before they do. It is just the natural progression to go from watching Mickey Mouse Club House and Handy Manny to Hannah Montana or The Jonas Brother, right?

So at night, after the kids are in bed, I watch Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Jonas and The Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

I watch the shows and laugh at the jokes even though at times it is painful to do so. I endure the hours and hours of poor acting that makes me want to poke my own eyes out. I bob my head to the music and try to tune out the headache that is forming.

But I watch and I am committed to watching all for the sake of being the 'cool mom'. I am doing it for my kids. They will thank me someday, when I know what is in and cool.

Lately, there been a strange thing is happening. I find that I no longer have to force laughter at the lame and poorly timed comedy. I find myself not being able to change the channel after a show is finished.

I have also found, you may want to sit down for this, that the music of Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez has made it onto my iPod. And not only has the music made it onto my iPod but I regularly listen to it with the volume turned way up while dancing around.

*gasp*

I know, I know. But I assure you, it is all in the name of the being the 'cool mom' so it's all good, people. It's all good.

Because being a 'cool mom is not just a dream, it is a state of being.

I bet you would still be cool even if you didnt watch those shows and listen to that music.

Have you heard the new Miley Cyrus song???? Awesome!

You are so funny! My sister is the epitome of the cool mom. She goes to those concerts with her daughters and sings and dances and just has fun. She's going to be the mom that everyone says, "Your mom is so cool. I wish she was my mom."

You're well on your way, my dear. Keep it up!

You've always been cool. Me - I need to take lessons from you.

hahahahaha. it's all fun and games now but wait until you have to hear miley/hannah sing "he could be the one" all.day.long. because for some strange reason disney thinks it'll be cool the play the.same.episode. 6 times in one day. and she sings that song 20 times in that episonde. until the only words you are even able to utter sound something like "i think i'm really diggin on his viiiibe" and you just KNOW if you hear it 1.more.time. it will "be the one" that completely drives you over the edge.

i'm okay now. really. but just thinking about it brings back emotional scarrage that i'm sure i'll have for years;)

Excellent! You know how I feel about this.

Can my boys come hang with you?

Great stuff girl - you see, you are already the "cool mom".

And you have to admit - the tunes are very catching.

I think you're totally going to be the coolest mom ever!

Keep bobbing that head!

You are cool, my friend. Just think, in addition to your hip music and TV viewing, someday you are going to be able to roll up your shirt sleeve and show your kids your tattoo!

If those three things combined do not make you the perfect trifecta of cool, then I do not know what will. :)

You are already a cool mom!!

You might wanna take it easy with all your, um, preparations, though. In a couple years, you'll watch this stuff over and over. And over. I agree it's funny and the music really isn't bad! But when you've seen 1,347 times? It might make your ears bleed.

And have you seen Drake and Josh? It's an old one, but funny.

Oh, I am so not the cool mom! Can't stand that stuff.

Except I have 2 boys, you see, and I know about super heroes and dinosaurs and I like video games... so maybe I'm cooler than I think.

Brandy said...

Oh no! Not Hannah Montana. LOL!

I'd like to think I'm one of the cool moms too. And I know Stevie is THE cool dad. All the kids love him...

You will be the coolest mom in Michigan, Jen, for sure!

I love Suite Life, and iCarly. Watch it with Isabel quite often. Don't have the music on my iPod, though, but my kids are getting old enough that they are loving my Kings of Leon and Black Eyed Peas...

Gabe has a constant request for some Boom Boom Pow every time we get in the van!

I wanna come hang out in the woods with you and eat nachos and banana splits! That sounds awesome.

I must say that I am dreaming your same dream! Right now, though, Moose's idea of cool would be to let him take a "bath" (swim) when it's cold outside...boy, I wish he understood "later."

Cool Mom Score= A+
However, given your ratio of boys to girls, I suggest also taking up
1- bodily noises 101
2- bmx biking
3- grunting

I'm off now. Hannah Montana is on!

I worked in a gym daycare last year with a bunch of 9-12 year old girls. It rubs off!

Gracey said...

No, Jen, you CAN'T become a cool mom.

Why? Because you ALREADY ARE one!

Your dream house-food-attitude seems amazing, though. I wish I could hang out with you.

Maggie's latest favorite show is "Phineas and Ferb." We were watching, but not really paying attention after the show ended and one of the Disney Teen shows came on. Maggie looked at it and said "Mom, that's not a Maggie show. Let's watch a Maggie show not a Mommy show." I informed her that it was NOT a Mommy show and we would indeed watch something else.

I hope I can be the cool mom as well, but not if it means I have to be a Miley Cyrus fan. Of course, by the time Maggie gets to be that age, Miley will be "old" and "outdated" anyway and there will be some other annoying teen that I'll have to follow with Maggie.

oh welcome to my hannah montana world!! have the music on our ipod too... and we all sing and dance around the kitchen to it. my girls think it's funny that i know all the words - but hey, i watch it with them, why wouldn't i, right?

rock on cool mom!!

You are a cool mom. My mom was the exact opposite of the cool mom.

You are cool without even trying:-)

I know just what you mean! I think our satellite radio in the car is actually glued to Disney Radio. I know the words to every song.

All of the music is on my Ipod too including the Disney Christmas CD from last year with Billy Ray singing Run Rudolph!

Glad to know there are other cool mom's like me out there! ;0)

wow....checking out the Disney Channel after dark...you are the coolest! lol

That is some serious dedication! :) I would love to be the cool mom too, but I am not sure if I have the energy...

I had this same dream. One or two episodes of iCarly killed that pretty quick, though. I am just fine being a very UNcool, very lame mom. ;)

Also, do I have the only 9 year old girl on earth who would rather DIE than be exposed to an episode of Hannah Montana? Maybe she is as uncool as me?

Good luck on being a cool mom.

I think I'm hopeless, but my husband will probably be the cool dad because he loves to play and watch all things sports related.

Michelle said...

I'm probably in the minority here and may be putting my neck on the chopping block for saying this, but...

I can't stand Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana Banana whatever. She annoys the $&^% out of me. And her huge gums gross me out.

Okay, I said it. Please don't hate me!

Eek! I can't watch those frightening Disney Channel shows. If my kids want to watch them they have to watch upstairs.

I'd like to be a cool mom as well..but I do not want a bunch of kids hanging over at my house. I think I'd get annoyed and be all, "Okay, everyone go home!" after ten minutes.

I think it's because I was an only child and grew up with quiet..

Helene said...

You and me both, Jen!! I've been watching all the Disney shows with my kids...oh and right now we're watching High School Musical 3 and I'm singing right along with the DVD. I actually like this stuff!! I have Hannah Montana songs on my iPod too.

There was a time where I couldn't believe I was actually watching/listening to this stuff but now I totally love it. Yikes...I just outed myself. Oh well, looks like we're in the same boat. And it'll pay off for us someday...we'll be the cool moms someday.

Michelle said...

Too funny! My kids are into the "tween" Disney shows. Some are silly but iCarly is their latest favorite and it is kind of funny!

i gave up being the cool mom a long time ago and just settled for being the crazy mom...it's way easier...my hubs calls me the milf...lol...typical male.

CaraBee said...

Right now I'm not so much worried about being the cool mom as the one that doesn't throttle her child.

Selena Gomez sings? See? I am sooo not cool.

Swift Jan said...

Jen, That is committment!! LOL

oh! good cover! i'm going to use this explanation next time I'm caught with a lil Hannah Montana turned up! LOL!

Cool moms are also crackheads...which is why I started this nasty habit.

Jenn said...

OK, I agreed with all they cool stuff until you said...and I quote "You know the house, where all the kids come to chill and jam out." To chill and jam out...jam out. HAHAHAHAHA! That feels like my grandma saying groovy. LOL! You'll always be cool to me though!

Ahhh...you just need to do what I did. And let Claire dye her hair blue. Then you can hang up your hat. And check this one off!

Okay you are going to hate this answer but DO NOT TRY TO BE THE COOL MOM. Did you see "Mean girls"? Do you remember the blond girl's "cool mom"? She tried so hard and came off as a total dork.

I never respected any of my friends' "Cool Moms" because I knew we could get anything by them and we were always trying to figure out the newest way to break rules and get away with it.

Be yourself. If awesome food is you, then you'll be cool just doing that. You don't have to become a Disney person to do that. Because, my God, why would you do that to yourself???

Shannon said...

I want to be the "cool mom", too ;)

And my oldest started watching Hannah Montana when she was in kindergarten... so your time is coming soon, I'd say!

Jenners said...

Oh NO ... the Disney cyborg has got you!!!! ARGHHHH!

And I totally relate to this post .. I want to be a cool mom too. Mostly because I want to know what is going on and it is easier to do if the kids hang out at my place. But I need to tell you: my mom was a "cool mom" and I resented it like anything. I always felt my friends liked my mom more than me so it is a fine line to tread!

I watch that channel all the time but lately it's been more Nick than anything. Some things I really actually enjoy. iCarly is a good one but yours are way too young. Jonas is not so great but we watch it :)

My dream is to be the cool Mom too...unfortunately the teenagers I know really don't think so....What happened...insisting I AM cool doesn't work either!

Yea...I watch the Disney channel quite frequently, too. No shame, no shame. It's a channel I don't have to 100% watch- I can be doing lots of other things at the same time :)
