Taking the Pile on the Road

We did some traveling for this Thanksgiving. This is not uncommon for us. We tend to spend Thanksgiving in Indiana. Jeff's extended family lives there. Jeff and I have been going to Indiana since our first Thanksgiving together. You could say its a tradition.

I was really glad that gas prices decided to cooperate with traveling. It was nice for a change not to hand over a small fortune to fill up the van.
When we were single, we would always spend the night but once kids came into the picture, it became a day trip. It is only a 3 hours drive so a day trip is totally doable. Its just that the day is spent mostly in the car and there is not a lot of time for anything else.

So this year, I decided that we would stay for a night or two. Going camping this summer has given me more confidence where overnight trips are concerned. Spending the night would give us more time with our family and spread the trip out. The kids wouldn't have to spend so much time in the car. And I thought that they would have no issues with sleeping. (Boy, was I wrong, more on that later.)

We really did have a great time. It was awesome to see everyone. If you want to see some pictures go and visit here. The Thanksgiving meal was great, even if the kids didn't eat it. I sure ate and I probably ate enough for each one of the kids and then some.

On Friday, we were able to leave the babies with Jeff's aunt and take Hayden to his very first move in the theater. We went and saw Madagascar 2. It was a really cute movie and Hayden really seemed to like it expect for the seat that kept trying to eat him.
Oh and there was the drama of me loosing my camera. It was not just the camera but a very full flash card that I had not yet downloaded unto the computer. I was just about ready to have a break down and start sobbing in the corner when Jeff said, "I found it!" I sucked back my tears, let out a huge sigh of relief and said many prayers of thanks.

So there was a lot of fun had by all but what there wasn't a lot of sleeping going on. We stayed for 2 nights and both nights were full of crying, wailing, coughing, vomiting, bad dreams and very little sleeping. But on the good side, it did make for a very quiet and peaceful ride home.

The picture of everyone asleep--except Hayden--is priceless. And I love that you are driving. Girl, you should've been sleeping. Or eating truffles. I'm just sayin'.

Isn't it amazing just when we get the courage to do more with our children, they somehow always seem to make us wish we wouldn't!! No wonder you needed like 1000 hrs of sleep!!

I think you deserve some kind of award! You rock.

(BTW, I used to spend Thanksgiving in Lafayette, Indiana every year!)

That last picture is awesome!! Love the sleeping babes and the jam packed car!!

I am from Indiana, so I am slightly jealouse that you got to go "home" for Thanksgiving. :) What town is your husband from?

We took my son to Madagascar 2 this weekend also. He loved it!

Yep, the lack of sleeping on the kids part is what has kept us to day trips. I'm hoping it will get better over the next year. But, a big woo-hoo for a quiet ride home:)

I am always the driver, too. 'Cause even if Joe is driving, he's still sleeping. No kidding. I am always having to keep awake to make sure his eyeballs stay open. No fun.

Glad to hear you had fun, even though there wasn't much sleeping goin' on. There will be plenty of time for sleep later, like when we're sixty...

The sleeping at night part is what I hate about vacations. I would much rather someone come to my house so that I can sleep in my own bed, my kids can sleep in their own beds and we can avoid crying, wailing, and vomiting.

I remember the days were my brother, sister and I would cram into a the back see of a car and do a trip over 2000km (one direction) to visit grand parents. We did it at least every second year.

All I will say is am glad I wasn't my parents.

OMG girl you are so brave. I remember many nights of staying at my folks' house, with a pack-n-play in the "office" bedroom, with a baby wailing and wailing to be picked up. Yes, indeed, sleeping away from home is always an adventure. Glad you survived it!

Oh, BTW - Turd! (Hee Hee you get it.)

Looks like you should have all just slept in the car... but then again, there still might have been vomit. yuck!
We enjoyed the gas prices too.
Welcome home!

Your car looks like our car for any trip ... even to the store.

Only we aren't bundled up. SoCal and all...

Oh, priceless - that last shot.

My parents are 12 hours away. We've gotten it down to a "day" trip by leaving at 3 a.m.

By the time the boys figure out they aren't in their bed, we're half way there. The only way to drive!

Glad you guys are home safe and sound.

Great photos! I would be crying if I lost a full memory card too.

I love the picture of everyone in the car asleep.

Glad you guys had a good trip, besides the vomiting bit.

i almost cried when i thought you'd lost the pics! oh my goodness! and, it's always good to see that we are not the only ones packed to the gills with kid crap in the car. it takes way too long...we did an overnight at ryan's parents and we spent more time packing and unpacking than the travel time, i swear

Great story, gorgeous pics! Except WOW you scared me! That picture of Jeff! Remember, to an Australian, it looks like Jeff is in the driver's seat. FAST ASLEEP!

Car full of sleeping babies=relaxing drive. Now THAT is something to be thankful for.

Are you actually driving down the highway while taking pictures? I am amazed by your multi tasking ability. I guess that comes from having 80 babies!!! ;)

Whew! Close call on your camera... glad you found it!

Jeff... he might not be so glad since you've posted a pic of him asleep! hee hee hee!

OH, I would be crying in the corner too if I lost a camera. And a full card. When my computer died over the summer. And my vacation pictures hadn't been backed up, I was truly panicing. Thank goodness they were brought back from the dead.

And that last picture. That is one FULL van - with babies, suitcases - and stuff :-)

OH, we are all so so glad you piled everyone/everything in the mini and made the trip and wanted to spend/share your Thanksgiving with us weather it was in MI or IN! It was great fun and so nice to catch up and spend some time together - even if a child always seemed to be attached to one of us :-) If only I could beam you here @ times or beam myself there - what fun we would have! :-) We truly appreciate ALL you and Jeff had to do/prepare/endure to bring the family down!
