In the Name of Fashion

Did you hear about these? Really? High heels for babies? Really?

I mean what will they think about next? They are called Heelarious. They are suppose to be cute and kind of a joke. But who in the world would pay money for these? I know that I am new to this girl thing but I just don't get it.
Here is their segment on the Today show (there are shown in the first part of the segment).

Like they said, this product is causing quite a difference of opinion. People, mostly women, are split. What are your thoughts? Is this just a cute little shoe for a baby girl, sweet and innocent or are they pushing things to far and sending the wrong message? Is is just one more thing that is making our kids grow up to fast?

I'm gonna go with they send the wrong message and I think it's just another way we're making our kids grow up too soon....

They are really funny. I guess I would probably use them as part of a halloween costume.? Honestly, I'm not sure I would spend much money on a joke though.

I think they're hilarious. If someone gave them to me as a gift, I would probably put them on my child just to be funny. I wouldn't seriously buy them and think, "ooh baby stillettoes for my child!"

I am most definitely NOT a fan.
I blogged about it myself a few months back when I first saw them:

I know some of us take things way too seriously, but I just wish the fashion industry and clothing manufacturers would get a handle on not pushing the envelope for the sake of making a buck at the expense of our children. Bunny slippers are cute and innocent. Heels are meant for young ladies. But then, if we could ever convince fellow parents that the way our daughters dress is supposed to be a reflection of our family's Christian walk, things like micro-minis, cut-up skin tight jeans, crop tops - and high heels for babies - wouldn't be an issue worth bothering with.

I think they do go a little bit too far in terms of making the kids grow up too fast. I draw the line that these are sexualizing our girls. It isn't sexual, it's just too grown up and darn it, they grow up fast enough!

No! No! No! This is WRONG on all levels.

I don't know. I think like any fashion trend they should not be taken too seriously. Think about it, the babies are not even going to remember they had these silly shoes. Ya know? I wouldn't waste money on them though.

I realize that practicality has no place in a conversation concerning the fairer sex and shoes, but that was my first thought when I saw these. If you put these things on someone who's learning how to walk, you're just asking for twisted ankles or at a minimum a lot of unnecessary falling.

I'm less concerned about the 'tarting up' of our young'uns. While people can give anything sexual overtones (I'm a habitual offender, just ask Jen), it's much harder to do it with babies and children in general. I'm sure there's some guy somewhere who saw that segment and thought, "Ooh, that is so HOT!" By the same token, if they ran a segment about dressing babies in burlap sacks, there would be another guy thinking the same thing. How many of you would object if your daughter dressed up in your (adult-sized) heels for play? How is that any different?

I think there's some truth to the "kids are growing up too fast" argument, although I think we as a race have a tendency to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses and overplay our innocence as children.

To sum up, I certainly won't be buying these heels for Claire because they're ridiculously impractical and she has plenty of years ahead of her in which to play dress-up.

I think they are cute... but I wouldn't buy them for my own kid.

Those kids are going to grow up with deformed and crushed feet. Poor babies.

I tagged you with a mommy meme over at my blog :)

They are meant to be FUNNY, hence the name "Heelarious".

I don't think parents should be scolded for having fun with their babies. I mean my daughter has a shirt that reads "Does this diaper make my butt look big?" The kicker: she can't read.

People are too quick to take life too serious. I am proud to say that I am not one of them. Life is serious enough as it is ... the anniversary of 9/11 should point that out better than anything I say.

Not a fan. Maybe funny as a joke, but heck no would I actually put them on my baby girl.

I saw a 4-5 year old wearing HEELS the other day. I couldn't believe that there are shoe makers out there that make them for kids that age. I stared and stared. She was also wearing a halter top and a short short skirt....just like her mom.

My opinion...I'm going to do my darnedest to keep my girl a girl. There is plenty of time for dress up later.

Funny but not something I'd buy for my baby girl, if I had one. For the record, I wouldn't put them on my baby boys either. hehe

Wow. That's not for me or my family. There's a lot of talk about how heels stuff up an adult's feet, legs, knees, hips and spine. My baby girl won't be putting her growing & developing body into heels any time soon.

Podiatrists don't even recommend any type of flat shoes for babies before they need them (i.e., before they're walking.)

Heels? Nuh-uh.

Jen you're awesome at getting a conversation going.

I'm a couple days late on this debate...I tend to agree with Maternal Mirth...I would not spend my own money on them, however.

I'm late to this, too. But I think they are really disturbing. Little girls don't even have a chance to look like little girls anymore! There is nothing more disturbing then walking down the street, shaking my head at how some "teenage" girls are dressed and realizing they are actually pre-teens. If I ever have a daughter she is sooooo gonna tell me how much she hates me!

I think anybody who would actually buy these and put them on their child has WAY too much money. I won't go so far as the whole "sexualization of our children" argument but I do find them completely ridiculous and find it a little aggravating that we're wasting brain power on making and marketing this type of frivolous stuff instead of finding real answers to real problems.

Can kids just be kids for a while and not have to grow up so soon. I mean really!!!
