We Don't Have Anything to Eat.

I have decided that I am no longer going to feed my children. Well, I guess that is not the whole truth. I have decided that I am no longer going to feed my children healthy food for fear of going broke.
I did my grocery shopping today. Some $400 later, I have a fridge/pantry stocked with all the good stuff; fruit, veggies, whole wheat crackers, whole wheat pasta, cheese, low-fat snacks, etc. But my bank account it now empty.
Therefore, I have decided that I am going to just feed my kids junk and save my money. A McDonald's cheese burger is only $0.89 and the apples are only $1.19. I see nothing wrong with this. After all, there is fruit involved.
With this plan, I see some shopping in my future and maybe a new wardrobe.

(Kidding people. I am only kidding. But I mean really with the price of good, fresh food, it is no wonder why there is a childhood obesity epidemic.)

Yes, it is a fine line... Buy organic everything and your kids will be saved from the HORRIBLE PESTICIDES that killed all of us adults. Oh, wait....

Seriously! Why are we penalized for feeding our children healthy food? So not fair...

Amen, sister!!! My husband has an auto-immune disorder when it comes to soy, soy protein and soy flour. Ya, it makes shopping more expensive and so much more challenging. So not only do I get to shop healthy, I get to make it all from scratch.

Exactly!!!

Seriously, there is an entire zip code down near the Strip that does not have a grocery store. Many of the families do not have vehicles and therefore do most of their shopping at places like 7-11. Many kids grow up believing that Coke and Combos or Hostess snacks make for an adequate meal.

Amen sister! To cut grocery bill costs, Craig and I swear that even for the 3 of us it would be cheaper to just buy a cow to raise and milk than go to the store and buy a gallon of milk! We also need a garden and apple tree. We should probably buy some chickens too while we're @ it, but I'm not all that hip on the idea of having to cut their heads off to then cook/eat them.....guess I'll just keep getting my/Tyler's chicken nugget supply from McD's/Wendy's/the grocery. Doesn't it stink that it costs so much to be a good mom! :-)

Ha! Too funny. I do most of our shopping at Costco...and boy can I drop some money in that place.

We have the same issue here in England. That is so sad that a fat-filled McD is cheaper than a healthy, homecooked meal! I mean what kind of world do we live in. Water and lettuce leaves all round . . .

Not fair. It shouldn't cost so much to fill your fmaily with good stuff.

I agree!! Our grocery store sells TV dinners, 5 for $4. To buy everything to make home made meatloaf, homemade mashed potatoes and fresh corn costs WAY more than $4. Even whole wheat spaghetti and saue, which used to be the cheapest dinner I could buy, is getting expensive.

Yes, I have bought those TV dinners one or two times. I need to keep them in the freezer for those OOPS times.

I know what you're saying and my bank account groans in agony weekly.

I TOTALLY understand BUT I guess this is the only place I don't worry about the money I spend ONLY because not only are we just a fam of 3 but the food & cooking is my hobby and the hobby feeds the fam. I also drop money at the grocery store but NEVER at a clothing store. It's the ONLY place I don't look at prices just because I don't spend money anywhere else on myself. That's not bad, right?

I'm telling you... it's just crazy. I saw a display yesterday for hamgurger helper - 10 for $10. You're right - the crud is cheaper.... I sure wish they could figure out a way to make the important stuff cheaper...

Eating healthy really IS more expensive. And usually takes more time and energy to cook or find. It's easy to see why people turn to fast food. We did for a few years before I realized how bad it was and what I was teaching my children. Now we try to eat a lot healthier and avoid fast food except for those occasions you just have to for convenience.

I hear you. I noticed that apples were $2 a lb. on SPECIAL yesterday. Are you kidding? I think my grocery bill has gone up about $500 a month recently both because of the rise in food prices, but also because my kids eat so much. I do a lot of shopping at Costco but still......good food is pricey.

Yea, I gave up on feeding my kids healthy a long time ago. I am actually thinking about giving up eating all together. I hate cooking, I hate grocery shopping, and I hate carrying around extra weight. All 3 problems solved if I just stop eating! Right?

Holy Crap! $400! Wow!! Do you have a Trader Joe's?? They have lots of healthy organic stuff real cheap...cheaper than the grocery store crap... got some goodies there today.

You are so right. When it's cheaper to buy a happy meal than fresh fruits and vegetables, something's wrong. I've gotten a lot better at creative leftovering (yes, that's a new word), but there's only so much you can do with a bottle of soy sauce!

You don't even want to hear how much food costs here. Indian cuisine is obviously next to nothing ... but you buy anything imported like say Parmesan Cheese - and it costs $13 for a small bottle of it. Pasta is $3 - $5 per package! Cereal? $10 a box!

I'd join you on the McD's thing - but they don't sell burgers at ours.

And why poorer people have it much harder with the obese issue?!
