Recently, Hayden had his first trip to the Dentist. I really didn't know what he would do. The plan was for him to watch me get my teeth cleaned and then he would get his cleaned. I really was not looking forward to my part of the process. I was going to be in the chair, only able to look up and unable to police him. I was expecting him to climb all over the char and table, touch every single piece of equipment, and go up to the staff and ask if he could help (by help I mean pushing all the buttons and possibly drilling someone's tongue). He doesn't have the best track record with sitting still.
I was pleasantly surprised when he was very well behaved and even let them do the whole teeth cleaning. He was very interested in the whole process. He sat still, I actually looked out the window for a pig to fly by, and watched as I got my teeth cleaned. The dental hygienist that worked with us, totally rocked!
She really got Hayden interested and involved in the whole process by telling him that she was looking for all the 'sugar bugs' aka plaque. She even scraped some off my teeth to show him (gross). "You have to get sugar bugs out or they will make holes or cavities in your teeth" she told him. He was very into the whole sugar bug idea and was more than ready to get them out. He got right into the chair and opened up. When he got water to swish, he would shake is whole body to, "get all the sugar bugs loose so that they can be sucked out."
Hayden had such a fun time that when was done he asked if they could clean his teeth again. He kept saying, "I think I can feel another sugar bug way in the back. You need to go and get it."

Cute story. Hopefully, we'll have a great dental hygienist, too!
How cool is that?! Your dental hygienist ROCKED! I hope our first dental visit goes that well.
That's an awesome first visit! The dental world is SO different than when I was little.
You know, I've found with The Ladies that they are usually at their best when I'm prepared for them to be their worst.
Good going young man! We also had quite a good dentist experience (apart from the mushed finger)
That boy of yours really is a doll!
This is good to hear since I am on the verge of taking Tristan to his 1st appointment.
That's fantastic that he sat still for a cleaning... I can barely get my 5 year old to do that! Rock on mom!
Holy cow! I'm so impressed! What a big boy.
Holy cow! I'm so impressed! What a big boy.
Sounds like you had a great dental experience. My mom is a pediatric dental assistant and you would not believe some of the stories she tells about parents who scare the living daylights out of their kids before they get to the dentist and then their kids scream and cry the whole time.
Oh, you lucky girl.
Gabe wouldn't even let the dentist "count" his teeth at the last visit.
Luckily, his teeth appear to be in good shape, and he does like to brush them at home.
Maybe next time...
Those pics are adorable. Only a blogger/scrapbooker would take the camera to the dentist, you know that, right?
I'm way jealous. Aidan is gonna make me wish I was dead if I ever even get the courage to take him to the dentist. It skeeers me!
I wish I'd had a nice dentist/hygenist when I was little. I might not be so scared of them now if I had. ;)
I cannot believe that they let you take pictures. I tried that one once and they about freaked at me. Glad that it was a great weekend.
What a trooper Hayden is! It is lucky he had a good hygienist to make the process more enjoyable. I am absolutely dreading my daughter's first dentist visit. Talk about not sitting still, it will be a nachtmare.
Hey I left you a litte award on my blog! Thanks for such a great blog!
Sometimes I wish we could live at the dentist my kids are so good there!
Awww...I'm glad for you! I'm a hygienist too :) One thing I have learned is to never under estimate the ability of a child to do what they are suppose to do - they will suprise you!
That is great! My youngest loves going to the dentist. It could be the balloon and stickers, though, but I'm not complaining. :-)
Woohoo, way to go, Harden, at his first dental appointment! Look at that smile. Great photos, and what a relief it went well.
My kids all have an "unnatural" liking for the dentist. It's nice for me, but I don't understand it. :)
My girls both LOVE to go to the dentist. I hope they continue with that - and not be like me and stop going for 10 years because the vibrations of the polisher gave me the hebejebes.
Congratulations on a great dental visit. So, did you catch any of those pigs flying by.......funny
A good hygenist(doctor etc) can make all the difference in the world
Have a great day!
I had to laugh out loud at "i looked out the window for a pig to fly by." too funny.
I hate the dentist. Will Hayden come with me to my appt next month and hold my hand???
I'm glad he had such a good experience...I just hate hearing kids get traumatized from the dentist!
You can still see a little bit of his "baby-ness" left when he's tilting his head back with his mouth open...Too cute!
Maybe he has a future in dentistry....and and thank you for the saucy comment....
You are so lucky. Our first trip to the dentist with my youngest was a nightmare:-(
my kids are not keen on the dentist!!!!!!!!!
What a fun story. He is just so darn cute. I love all the pictures you got of the first dentist visit.
This post gives me hope. I have a feeling Elizabeth's first trip to the dentist will be awful, but maybe not? Hopefully?!?!
Yay for the 1st visit being a good one!
My oldest hates to go... she's even thrown up on herself while in the dentist's chair, she just gets so nervous and upset! She's only done that once, and she was 5 at the time. She's 7 now and at her last appt, as we were getting out of the van, she said "Oh my tummy just did a little flip-flop" (but she was ok)
