Writer's Workshop: Kind of Stumped

Well guess what? It's Thursday once again and that means that it is time for Writer's Workshop. I really, really like this. If you have not checked out Mama Kat, you really should. I find myself really looking forward to Thursdays to see what the prompts are (they come out on Wednesday) and to see what people come up with to write about.

I thought that this week was kind of a challenging. The prompts are really weird and off the wall but they did get me thinking. I really liked the Shaggy and Batgirl conversation in the elevator. I was thinking that I would ask Jeff and he could write a very funny post on that. And everyone would laugh and laugh and just love it. When I asked him, all excited, he just said, "I don't know. Shaggy is kinda a stoner so he would just ask Batgirl if she wanted some weed." Well, thats not funny and not what I wanted. Thanks for nothing. On to plan B.

The next one that spiked my interest was the one where you tell about when you disguised yourself. I could tell about the time I told a guy that my name was Regina and I was a princess from France on my way to marry a Chinese prince to save the world from world war 3. I even had a fake French accent and everything. But that is a really long story and I don't know, Its just weird. Next.

The last one that got me thinking was the question, What did you do before the Internet? That is such a loaded question. Really what did we do with out e-mail? Without all the information right at our finger tips? I do have to say this, I personally watched a lot more TV. But what about at work? What did we do before e-mail? How did people function? I guess they had to go and actually talk to each other either by picking up the phone or by actually having a face to face conversation. Go figure! There was also a lot more letter writing. I remember having pen pals as a kid. We would meet friends at camp and keep in touch by writing letter, with paper and stamps. Crazy. To get information, you would actually have to go to the library, open a book and look up stuff on microfiche. I remember having to lug all kinds of books home to write a research report. Oh my aching back.

I wonder, my kids will probably never know this; going to a book for information. Looking up an address in the phone book. They will just sit down in front of the computer and the world will be at their finger tips. Amazing.

How did we survive back in those olden days? Just think, our kids will never know a world with out the Internet. Just like they won't know cassette tapes, gas under $3.00 and cell phones that don't text message or take photos. Now thats crazy.

What did you do before the Internet? That's a great question. It seems like a million years ago, doesn't it. I got a lot more done, that's for sure. But I'd be lost without it!!!

I remember using paper and envelopes and stamps to keep in touch with the 10-year-old girls in my small group when I led a camp in January 1994.

The camp that we just returned from is keeping in touch with the campers by setting up a Facebook group specifically for those who went on the camp.

Now that's the sort of follow-up I could actually DO!

Before the internet, I watched more TV and read books. Now, I can do both online:-)

I used to love getting letters in the mail...running out to the mailbox in anticipation of what I would get.
It's true though, kids have NO IDEA what those things were like, without cell phones & internet.... oh well!!

Gas under $3. Now that's sad, isn't it?

Or how about phones with cords? Records?

I guess before the Internet invaded my life I watched more TV and read books more often.

I can't even remember life before the internet (cough cough!)
I must admit I still do have a hankering for encyclopedias and huge bound maps of the world. There's just something so homely about them, all huddled together on the floor, trying to find France or that funny heel bit in Italy!

I can't image life with out these things and yet I grew up with out them. I think I spent more real time with people instead of the current but with kids I would not have that extra time so this keeps me in touch with my friends more.

It is crazy to think about how much more difficult like was before the internet. As for what we did at work...they probably got more work done! lol. But people probably did have to travel more without net meeting!

difficult like was before the internet = difficult LIFE was before the internet

Sorry, too early for me, I guess.

I think I went outside sometimes... I don't totally remember. Let me google an "outdoor" image and see if it looks familiar.

I totally agree. In fact, I wrote on the same topic!

Yea, my kids nearly blow a gasket when I threaten to take the internet away. They act as if they can't live without it! My respone is that I didn't have it when I was a kid and I lived just fine.

All and all, I'm really glad we have it.

Its kinda sad though! I wonder if the Internet hinders kids from reading more books? I never thought of it that way.

I do love the internet & certain aspects of technology but only when things don't become obsolete like the letter writing and hadnwritten notes. It's good to use but not abuse these new advancements. Like, my hubby is happy with all of our pictures being on the mac at home. But me, I can't snuggle up to the PC with a glass of wine to go through old photos. I still print them out and put them in books. Certain things should not be replaced.

It makes me sad to think my kids may never have pen pals. That was so much fun!

It took me awhile to decide what to write about too. I just wasn't feeling very creative. Your's turned out well, though.

Shaggy was a total stoner...I loved your husbands contribution.

And seriously...I spent HOURS researching in the library. HOURS. I'm gonna make my kids do all their papers the "old school" way.
